PFAS and Neurotoxicity: 11 Genes at the Center of New Discovery

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), known as “forever chemicals,” can cross the blood-brain barrier, posing significant neurotoxic risks. A University at Buffalo study identified 11 critical genes impacted by PFAS, linked to neuronal survival and cell death, suggesting potential biomarkers for PFAS-induced neurotoxicity. The study highlights PFAS’ varied effects based on their unique molecular structures.
Among six PFAS tested, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) had the most profound impact, altering nearly 600 genes and disrupting synaptic growth. The findings emphasize the need for safer alternatives, as short-chain PFAS show promise with lower environmental persistence but require further validation for safety and efficacy.
