Does Grab’s Advance Booking Actually Work for a 3 AM Jakarta Airport Run?

We had no choice but to take a 7:15 AM flight to Tokyo. Here is how a scheduled ride solved our middle-of-the-night transit anxiety.

When you are booking an international flight, you don't always get to choose the perfect departure time. That was exactly our situation when planning our return journey to Japan: the only available flight from Jakarta to Tokyo that day was scheduled for an ungodly 7:15 AM.

With our options effectively narrowed down to exactly one, we were faced with a serious logistical puzzle. To make it to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) with enough time to check in, we had no choice but to leave our city-centre accommodation at 3:00 AM.

However, escaping Jakarta in the dead of night presents a distinct kind of travel anxiety.

At that hour, the city’s reliable and budget-friendly public transport networks, such as the airport trains and public buses, simply aren’t running yet. A taxi or private car hire was our only realistic choice. Now, I absolutely swear by the ride-hailing app Grab for daily transit across Southeast Asia. However, relying on a live map to find an available driver wandering the streets at 3:00 AM felt like too much of a gamble when an international flight was on the line.

To eliminate the middle-of-the-night panic, we decided to put Grab’s "Advance Booking" (scheduled ride) feature to the ultimate test.

This particular story is based on our experience back in 2025, but for some reason, flights from Jakarta to Tokyo always seem to end up being at these painfully early hours. In fact, when we flew from Jakarta to Tokyo again in February 2026, we were faced with the exact same issue: a super early morning flight was our only option. Once again, Grab's advance booking feature came to our rescue and saved the day.
