Topic: Your Security System Text: Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 15:16–20

This month, we continue our central theme of being built to last. We have explored how to construct structures that can withstand the test of time and adversity. Today, we will examine another crucial aspect of any enduring structure: its security system.

The security of a building is vital because even a house built to withstand harsh conditions can be deliberately damaged or destroyed if it comes under attack.

The temple in Jerusalem serves as a pertinent example. It was a magnificent structure designed to endure, yet it fell to destruction not due to its foundations failing, but because invading armies intentionally sought to tear it down (2 Kings 25:8–10).

Thus, while the right materials are essential for construction, an effective security system is also necessary to protect the building in a world full of those who seek to invade and plunder.

For us, the living temples of God, that security system is the heart. Our first text in Proverbs reminds us: “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

The Hebrew concept behind the phrase “keep your heart” depicts guarding, watching over, and preserving something valuable. It is similar to a building protected by constant surveillance and vigilant security. In the same way, believers are urged to maintain a careful watch over their hearts.

The reason for this is that the heart is the source from which the issues of life flow. Our Lord Jesus further clarified this truth in our second text, teaching that what comes from a person’s heart is what truly defiles them (Matthew 15:18–20).

This is significant because we may sometimes fall into the trap of developing a merely outward form of religion. We could adopt visible practices that set us apart, yet neglect the true condition of our hearts. Jesus teaches that what primarily corrupts a person are not external factors but rather the sinful thoughts and desires that arise from within, such as evil thoughts, lust, bitterness, pride, envy, and other works of the flesh.

Beloved, as you strive to build a lasting foundation, living according to God’s will, standing firm on His promises, and pursuing a consecrated life, it is essential to guard your heart.

Be diligent in monitoring it. Do not let offences, lust, pride, bitterness, envy, or any other corrupt seed take root within you. While many invaders can destroy a house from the outside, these negative influences can invade your heart and seek to destroy you from within.

Be careful and watchful each day regarding what you allow into your heart. Protect it with the Word of God, prayer, and continual fellowship with the Holy Spirit. If your heart is preserved, the life built upon it is far more likely to endure.
