Silent Camping in South Garut, West Java: Staying in a place of nowhere and Eating Ulva

My camp spot
Last weekend, I embarked on a spontaneous camping trip in South Garut, West Java with my close friend. Unlike the usual tourist spots, we discovered a quiet patch at the edge of a local farmer’s garden, untouched and undeveloped. As night fell, the place became completely silent and no tourists, no sounds of vehicles, only the whisperof the wind and distant animals. At the first, it felt a bit uneasy, camping in a non-tourist area, but soon I realized the rare opportunity to experience nature in its purest form.

During our stay, I also get down from the cliffs to beach where I enjoyed the calming sound of waves and explored the marine life. Among the discoveries was Ulva, commonly known as sea lettuce. Since I didn’t bring any seasoning or ingredients, I boiled it and added it to instant noodles. Surprisingly, it tasted normal and was perfectly edible. This small experiment taught me how to use Ulva as an emergency food source, a practical lesson in resourcefulness while in the wild.

Enjoying the beach
This camping trip reminded me that the beauty of nature doesn’t always lie in popular tourist attractions. Sometimes, stepping off the beaten path allows us to truly connect with our surroundings, discover unexpected resources, and learn a little more about survival and creativity.
