The human a Symbiotic Civilization actually needs

I have spent most of my working life trying to understand whether an economy can become ethical without becoming decorative.
First through economic journalism, watching how decisions get justified once they’re turned into numbers. Then through clean energy and water tech, where the promise was obvious but the incentives around it hadn’t changed. Then through manufacturing and 3D-printed fashion, trying to prove that beauty and production didn’t have to run on cruelty or waste. Later through climate tech, investor meetings, policy rooms, systems design — different rooms, same question underneath: can prosperity exist without extraction?
For years I thought the answer was better technology, better policy, better capital. I still believe in all of those. I just don’t think they’re enough on their own anymore, because I’ve watched a regenerative system get handed to people who were still operating from an extractive mind, and watched it quietly become extractive again — just in a more sophisticated shape.
I didn’t arrive at this because I wanted another theory. I got here through a strange sequence of events.
A few years ago I ran a public challenge on myself: one new innovation concept a day, for 365 days. It went on for 616. What started almost playfully turned into something else — I stopped being interested in the concepts themselves and got stuck on the assumptions underneath them. Why did some ideas feel alive and others just clever? Why did “sustainable” so often mean less harmful instead of something that actually gave life back?
That practice is what led me to write the early paper on Symbiotic Civilization. And it’s also what set up the harder lesson.
Two weeks after I finished that paper, I traveled to Belém for COP. I had an experience there with someone whose public language was full of protection, land, and sacredness, while his private conduct told a different story.
That didn’t make me cynical about Indigenous knowledge. It forced me to pull apart three things I’d been letting blur into one — ecological proximity, ecological wisdom, and moral development. They are not the same capacity, and none of them guarantees the others. The question I’d been asking changed: not what kind of civilization could live symbiotically with Earth, but what kind of human being could sustain that civilization without corrupting it from the inside.
That human has a name I keep coming back to: Homo Symbioticus. Not a new species — a developmental orientation. The capacity to participate in human and ecological systems in ways that increase the health and flourishing of those systems, while maintaining one’s own.
Both halves matter. Self-sacrifice isn’t this. Protecting your own comfort while everything around you degrades isn’t this either. The narrower, harder case is mutual flourishing — the person and the system getting healthier through the relationship itself.
Why this archetype, and why now
Every civilizational stage carried an implicit model of the human being — the cultivator, the worker, Homo Economicus and his rational self-interest, more recently the founder and the disruptor. What’s different now is scale. We’re no longer just living inside natural systems. We’re altering them: climate, biodiversity, the nitrogen cycle, ocean chemistry, all carrying our signature.
A species with that much planetary leverage can’t keep organizing itself around extraction and calling it progress. Not because people suddenly need to love nature more, though many do. Because our technical capacity has outrun our relational maturity. We became planetary in impact before we became symbiotic in consciousness, and that gap is the actual crisis underneath most of the others.
Nobody has actually done this yet
I want to be precise about this, because it’s tempting to round it into something gentler.
By 2025, scientists confirmed that seven of the nine planetary boundaries we depend on are now breached, ocean acidification crossed for the first time that year.1 We’ve been shaping this planet, not merely occupying it, since long before industrialization — Rome’s pollution shows up in Greenland ice cores, Maya deforestation likely worsened the droughts that broke its cities. Modern industrial civilization has clearly failed this test. That part isn’t controversial.
What’s less comfortable is what I had to unlearn in Belém: that the imagined alternative doesn’t pass it either. There’s a name for the habit I’d fallen into — the “Ecological Indian,” or noble savage trope — and it’s been seriously challenged since Shepard Krech’s work in the late nineties.2 It assumes a people are inherently closer to nature simply for not being industrial, and a joint UN report on violence against Indigenous girls and women, including child marriage and early pregnancy at rates above the global average in some regions, makes clear how much that assumption can hide.3 Indigenous women themselves are the ones pushing this into visibility, and they’re clear about the cause — colonization, poverty, the dismantling of structures that used to protect them — not anything inherent to being Indigenous rather than modern.
But I’d rather not make this about one culture, because the deeper pattern is bigger than that and more useful once you see it clearly: ecological knowledge and moral development are separate capacities, and humans keep mistaking one for the other. I’ve seen it in spiritual communities, where the language of sacredness gives a teacher cover to do almost anything to whoever trusts him most. I’ve seen it just as clearly in startups built around the word “regenerative,” run by founders who treat their own employees as fuel. It’s the same failure as a pipeline leak, just relocated to where it’s harder to see.
So here’s the honest version of the claim: no civilization, anywhere, has yet managed both halves at once — a living world getting healthier, and its own people, including the ones with the least power, getting safer. Not the industrial world. Not any of its imagined alternatives.
The extractive mind
The extractive mind isn’t defined by geography, class, or culture. It’s a way of relating, one that sees the world as supply: land, attention, trust, beauty, even moral language, all available to be taken. It wears a suit one day and an activist’s vest the next, a uniform or a spiritual robe. The vocabulary keeps changing. The question underneath it doesn’t: what can I take, and what can I call necessary?
This is why I don’t think Symbiotic Civilization can be built through external reform alone. Extraction isn’t only an economic structure. It’s a pattern of perception. It starts the moment another living being stops being fully real to you.
The regenerative performer
The open extractor is at least legible. The harder figure is the one who speaks fluently about healing, reciprocity, justice, or the sacred, while privately reproducing exactly what that language claims to oppose. He doesn’t reject the vocabulary of care — he uses it. Performs protection while seeking access to the vulnerable, and humility while feeding something much hungrier. Marches for the climate one day and harms someone privately the next.
So performance can’t be the test. Not the speeches, not the ceremonies, not the public virtue. The test is what happens in a relationship when no one’s watching — how power gets used, how vulnerability gets treated, what happens when truth threatens someone’s image, or when repair would cost their ego something.
Clean attention, and what presence actually does
There’s a concept I think about often: attention pollution. We treat pollution as something material — carbon, plastic, runoff. But a person can contaminate the relational field around them just as concretely, through manipulation, ambiguity, or intermittent reinforcement, and once attention is captured that way, even sincere language about regeneration becomes unreliable, because nobody can tell it apart from the performance anymore.
You can feel the difference in presence itself, even if it’s hard to measure. Some people walk into a room and the system becomes more coherent — people get more honest, more capable, less anxious. Others walk in and the room starts quietly reorganizing around their hunger. Homo Symbioticus isn’t defined by holding the right beliefs. It’s a presence that leaves whatever it touches more capable of life, not less.
What the archetype actually looks like
I’ve spent too much of my life building and inventing to romanticize withdrawal. Homo Symbioticus is not anti-technology, anti-market, or anti-progress. It asks what kind of consciousness is doing the building. It’s a question of what kind of mind is doing the building.
A few capacities run through it: mutuality, where the relationship makes both sides healthier, which is the core of the whole thing. Reciprocity — what’s taken gets answered, as an ongoing practice, not a single offsetting gesture. Systems awareness, the felt sense of being inside the consequences you set in motion. An ecological identity where the world’s wellbeing is part of your own self-concept, not a cause held at arm’s length. Truthfulness that survives contact with pressure. Accountability that doesn’t dissolve the moment someone gains real power. And a kind of self-flourishing that doesn’t confuse health with conquest, or visibility with meaning.
These only work braided together. Care without truth turns into sentimentality. Truth without care turns into cruelty. Power without accountability turns into extraction. That’s the actual reason I don’t think of Homo Symbioticus as an environmental archetype. It’s a more integrated way of being a person, and the ecological part is downstream of that, not separate from it.
Developmental markers of Homo Symbioticus
Homo Symbioticus isn’t recognized by identity, ideology, proximity to nature, or public language. The archetype becomes visible through patterns of relationship. A Homo Symbioticus:
- makes life safer, especially for the vulnerable
- creates coherence, reducing confusion, manipulation, and relational noise
- practices truth under pressure, especially when truth threatens image or power
- uses power as responsibility, not access
- turns attention into care, not control
- participates rather than possesses — in ecosystems, relationships, institutions, ideas
- builds systems that increase mutual flourishing, not private extraction
- repairs harm without theatrical self-defense
- protects aliveness, including Earth, children, women, animals, trust, beauty, and future possibility
- leaves people and systems more capable of life than before.
I’m not claiming to have invented the phrase. Joël de Rosnay published a book literally titled Homo symbioticus in 1997, building on earlier work about civilization as an evolving organism.4 What I’m claiming is narrower and, I think, more honest: I’ve defined this particular framework.
Fragments, not finished civilizations
A few real things give me hope, even as fragments. New Zealand’s legal recognition of the Whanganui River as a living entity with its own guardians — proof that “the river is alive” can become law, not just metaphor. Community forest concessions in Guatemala’s Maya Biosphere Reserve, holding deforestation far below the surrounding region while still supporting the people who live there. Bhutan writing sixty percent forest cover into its constitution. The Klamath River dam removals, driven largely by Indigenous advocacy, showing a damaged system start to recover once legal, ecological, and cultural pressure finally aligned.
None of these is a whole civilization, and given everything above, I’d resist the urge to assume the people running any of them have solved the human half of this just because they’ve made real progress on the ecological half. A forest can be better managed while the women near it remain unsafe. A river can gain legal standing while the institutions around it still protect powerful men. The test has to stay whole: is the living system healthier, and are the people, especially the ones with the least power, actually safer.
Why inner work still isn’t enough
There’s a risk in saying civilization begins within — it can turn into an excuse to avoid politics, and that’s not what I mean. Inner alignment doesn’t regulate a market or restore a river on its own. But without it, the institutions built to do those things get captured by the same old mind the moment they receive real power.
Donella Meadows argued that the deepest leverage point in any system is the paradigm it was built from, not the policy layered on top of it.5 Elinor Ostrom found something similar studying commons that actually survive — they’re held together by trust and locally legitimate accountability, not rules handed down from above.6 A Symbiotic Civilization needs both registers at once: design and restraint, innovation and humility. Neither one substitutes for the other.
The final test
The test isn’t whether someone says Earth is alive. It’s whether life becomes more capable around them: more truthful, more protected, more free to flourish, not merely less harmed. Do the people near them get more honest? Are the vulnerable ones actually safer, does power answer to anyone, does care turn into action instead of staying an identity people perform?
Homo Economicus asked what humans maximize. Homo Faber asked what humans make. Homo Ludens asked what humans play. This is a different question: what kind of human can participate in living systems without degrading them.
For me, that’s where Symbiotic Civilization actually begins, not with a slogan, and not with some imagined past that never managed this either, but with a harder, more personal question: can we become people through whom life has a better chance?
That person has a name. Homo Symbioticus.
