The marketing of manufactured victimhood is at an all-time high, and it’s running rampant through both politics and the rap game. Look at how the narrative is getting spun around the Drake and Kendrick battle. People are online talking about a "Drake elimination campaign" or an industry-wide conspiracy to take the man down. Stop the whining. The man simply lost a lyrical boxing match. Nike didn’t cut his deal, Apple didn’t pull his streams, and the corporate entity that loans him his private jet didn’t take the keys back. He’s an industry kid from a television background who was built by the labels—he is the mainstream. Playing the victim when a hit record lands on your chin is a classic corporate hustle. It’s no different than Donald Trump, a fast-talking slick Yorker from Queens, cosplaying as a southern hick because it’s a better play for business. Don’t let the PR campaigns distract you from the scoreboard.
