I Was Defeated Before I Even Picked Up a Sword

How it feels to try your hardest knowing you were never allowed to win.

I knew from the beginning that the odds weren’t in my favor.

Being an irregular student, I was already placed behind others. I’ve always aimed to be an honor student — not for attention or validation, but because it was something I really wanted for myself. It was a quiet dream that I pray for every time I pushed through sleepless nights and difficult days. Deep down, I knew it might be impossible.

Still, I hope.

I tried. I really, really tried.

I always made sure I was present — in class, recitations, groupings, in everything. I studied for every assessment, submitted every needed requirement, help those who were in need, and gave my best in every task. I showed up even when I didn’t feel like it. I stayed up late finishing school works while everyone else was already sleeping. I carried the pressured quietly, hoping that somehow, my hard work would matter.

But when I found out that no matter what I do, I could never be an honor student… I broke.

It was like hitting a wall that I didn’t know was there. All the weight I’d been carrying suddenly crashed on me. My motivation, my goal, my strength — all of it started to fade. I kept asking myself:

Para saan pa? Para saan pa ‘tong lahat ng puyat, pagod, at effort, kung ‘di ko rin naman makakamit ang pinapangarap ko?

I was defeated before I even picked up a sword.

The was was already over before I stepped onto the battlefield. And I was left there — standing in silence. That’s what hurt me the most — not the lost itself , but the fact that I never had a fair chance in the fight to begin with.

I was scared. I still am.

Scared of failing. Scared of not meeting people’s expectations. Scared of not even meeting my own. People see me as someone who has potential — someone who’s smart, hardworking, and capable. And how others perceived me, that only made it worse. Because how can you tell people that despite doing your best, it wasn’t enough?

It’s hard not to feel like I let everyone down.

It’s even harder when I feel like I let myself down. Because I really believed that if I have chance, I could do it.

But maybe… this is the part where I learn something else.

The effort still matters, even if it doesn’t win awards. That discipline and consistency are still wins — even if no claps for them. That I am still worthy, still enough, even without medals or recognition.

Okay lang. Maybe I didn’t win the way I hoped to — but that doesn’t mean it was all for nothing.

Maybe the recognition I wanted won’t come in the form of medal or titles. But there will always be people who will see the effort I gave. There will still be those who will appreciate me. And maybe, that kind of strength… is worth something too.
