A Century of Unprecedented Progress
To understand where humanity stands today, you need to appreciate how far it has come. Global life expectancy soared from around 30 years in 1870 to 71 years in 2021, driven by vaccines, antibiotics, clean water, sanitation, and sweeping improvements in healthcare, particularly for young children. For much of the 20th century, life expectancy climbed at the remarkable pace of three years per decade. That rate of progress reshaped societies, retirement systems, and the very way people thought about their futures. statnewsstatnews
Between 1900 and 1938, life expectancy in wealthy nations rose by roughly five and a half months per generation. Someone born in 1900 could expect to live an average of 62 years, while a person born in 1938 could expect to reach about 80 years, a dramatic improvement over just a few decades. The engine behind that surge, researchers now understand, was largely the conquest of early childhood death. sciencedaily
The Engine That Powered Longevity Has Run Out of Steam
In the early 20th century, rapid declines in infant mortality, brought about by medical innovation, improved sanitation, and higher living standards, significantly boosted average life expectancy. Today, infant and child mortality rates in high-income countries are already extremely low, meaning future gains must come from improved survival at older ages. ScienceDaily
That is a far harder problem to solve. The biggest boosts to longevity have already occurred through successful efforts to combat disease, with the damaging effects of aging now standing as the main obstacle to any further extension.
As S. Jay Olshansky of the University of Illinois Chicago put it, “Most people alive today at older ages are living on time that was manufactured by medicine. But these medical Band-Aids are producing fewer years of life even though they’re occurring at an accelerated pace, implying that the period of rapid increases in life expectancy is now documented to be over.” uic
What The New Research Found
A major new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences set out to quantify exactly how much the pace of longevity has slowed. The research was conducted by Héctor Pifarré i Arolas of the La Follette School of Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, José Andrade of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, and Carlo Giovanni Camarda of the Institut national d’études démographiques.
Drawing from the Human Mortality Database, the team examined data from 23 high-income, low-mortality countries using six independent forecasting methods. sciencedaily
For generations born between 1939 and 2000, progress slowed to around two and a half to three and a half months per generation, depending on the statistical model used. The contrast with the earlier boom years is stark, and the data leave little room for optimism about a return to that earlier pace. sciencedaily
“We forecast that those born in 1980 will not live to be 100 on average, and none of the cohorts in our study will reach this milestone. This decline is largely due to the fact that past surges in longevity were driven by remarkable improvements in survival at very young ages,” said corresponding author Andrade. ScienceDaily
According to Pifarré i Arolas, “The unprecedented increase in life expectancy we achieved in the first half of the 20th century appears to be a phenomenon we are unlikely to achieve again in the foreseeable future. In the absence of any major breakthroughs that significantly extend human life, life expectancy would still not match the rapid increases seen in the early 20th century even if adult survival improved twice as fast as we predict.”
Reaching 100 Is Not Becoming the New Normal
One of the most striking conclusions from this body of research involves the much-hyped idea that living to 100 will soon become commonplace. Researchers looking back at data from 1990 to 2019 in the eight countries with the longest-lived populations, as well as the United States and Hong Kong, found that the average proportions of women and men expected to survive to 100 were 5.1% and 1.8%, respectively, well below predictions made in other studies. To get a sense of the best-case current scenario, Olshansky and colleagues took the lowest death rates recorded in 2019 across the world in different age groups and created a composite life table. They found that life expectancy was around 89 years for women and 83 years for men, numbers that Olshansky described as a soft limit on lifespan. statnews
Olshansky said that while more people may reach 100 years and beyond this century, those cases will remain outliers that won’t move average life expectancy significantly higher. His message to industries and financial planners banking on the assumption that most people will reach a century: “This is profoundly bad advice because only a small percentage of the population will live that long in this century.” uic
The Harder Mathematics of Extending Life
Part of why further gains are so difficult comes down to the compounding challenge of adding years at the upper end of the lifespan. During the early 1900s, mortality reductions of around 4% were enough to boost life expectancy by a year. Now, increasing female life expectancy from 88 to 89 years would require a 20.3% reduction in mortality from all causes at all ages, while increasing male life expectancy from 82 to 83 years would require a 9.5% reduction. statnews
In a hypothetical scenario in which life expectancy reaches 110, the authors estimate that 1 in 4 women would live to at least 122 years. There is only one person in history documented to have lived that long, Jeanne Calment, a French woman who passed away in 1997. The implication is clear: without something that fundamentally changes human biology, such extreme longevity will remain a statistical anomaly, not a generational milestone. statnews
A Debate Decades in The Making
In 1990, Olshansky published a paper in Science that argued humans were approaching a ceiling for life expectancy of around 85 years of age and that the most significant gains had already been made. Others predicted that advances in medicine and public health would accelerate 20th-century trends upward into the 21st century. UIC Today
Thirty-four years of real-world data later, the evidence has sided with the skeptics. Olshansky became convinced of the immutability of the aging problem and chose to “be a patient scientist,” retesting his hypothesis once real-world data came in. “People could try and dispute this, but they can’t, because this is what the data tell us actually happened,” he said. “We made a very specific prediction that the rise would decelerate, even in the face of advances in medical technology. We now know the answer.” Scientific American
Eric Verdin, CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, who was not involved in the study, offered this perspective: “Talking about things that are unattainable sells books, and it generates clicks, and it generates enthusiasm … but it also detracts from the serious work that can be done now.” Statnews
What About Lower and Middle-Income Countries?
It is worth noting that this picture of a slowdown applies primarily to wealthy, high-longevity nations. Lower and middle-income countries may experience rapid rises in life expectancy this century, but these increases will largely come from public health benefits that have already been realised in wealthier nations. In other words, the developing world is not charting new territory for human longevity; it is catching up to a destination that richer countries have largely already reached. statnews
Countries like South Korea and Hong Kong have seen significant gains in recent decades, though these have mostly plateaued. The path forward for all nations increasingly runs through the same biological wall: aging itself. Iulabs
Healthspan, Not Just Lifespan
Olshansky argues that extending life expectancy even further by reducing disease could be harmful if those additional years are not healthy years, and that the focus should now shift to efforts that slow aging and extend healthspan, a relatively new metric that measures the number of years a person is genuinely healthy, not just alive. uic
Olshansky’s team is planning to track changes in health span and has noted early evidence suggesting that longer lives are not always healthier ones. A 2017 study found that between 1990 and 2016, the number of years people lived with significant limitations from disease or injury grew on average from 8.2 years to 9.3 years worldwide. statnews
Unless new technologies address aging itself, further radical life extension in already long-lived countries “remains implausible,” the researchers wrote. Nalini Raghavachari, a program officer at the U.S. National Institute on Aging, who was not involved in the study, agreed that research should focus on understanding and achieving healthy aging. A Glass Ceiling, not a Brick Wall
Despite the sobering picture painted by the data, researchers are not calling time on human potential. Olshansky framed the current situation this way: “This is a glass ceiling, not a brick wall. There’s plenty of room for improvement: for reducing risk factors, working to eliminate disparities and encouraging people to adopt healthier lifestyles, all of which can enable people to live longer and healthier. We can push through this glass health and longevity ceiling with geroscience and efforts to slow the effects of aging.” uic
The study authors emphasise that unexpected developments, such as new pandemics, medical breakthroughs, or major societal shifts, could alter these trends, but current evidence strongly suggests a long-term slowdown. Both governments and individuals may need to adjust their expectations and plans for the decades ahead. sciencedailysciencedaily
Olshansky himself puts his own thinking into practice, exercising regularly and wearing hearing aids in light of evidence that doing so can reduce the risk of dementia. “It’s not like I don’t know that winter is coming,” he said. “But there are so many things that we can do on a day-to-day basis to lower our risk and improve our health and quality of life, and that’s what I zero in on.” statnews
The data may be telling you that the ceiling is closer than you thought. But how you live within that ceiling, and how healthy those years are, remains very much within your control.
