From Workplace to Society: What Changes?

So you can rehearse a conversation before it happens. What does that actually change?

Start small. You walk into a salary negotiation having already practiced against a version of your boss that pushes back the way they really do. You’re not hoping it goes well. You’ve been here before.

Now scale it up. McKinsey surveyed executives on how they decide and found only 20% say their organization is good at it. Most said the time they spend deciding is largely wasted — at an average Fortune 500 company, roughly 530,000 lost working days and $250 million in wasted labor every year.

Most of that waste isn’t bad analysis. It’s misread people. A strategy the CFO hears as risk and the CEO hears as ambition. A plan that dies not because it was wrong, but because no one rehearsed how the room would receive it.

Personas change the order of operations. You simulate the room before you enter it — where the CFO digs in, where the board hesitates, where the message lands sideways — and you adjust before it gets expensive.

Then scale it all the way up. When a central bank speaks, markets don’t react to the words. They react to what each listener believes the words mean. Model those beliefs — eighteen committee members, not one “market” — and you can see the misreading coming.

It’s the same idea at three sizes: one conversation, one company, one economy. The thing being modeled is always the same — a real person, thinking the way they actually think.

We won’t stop misunderstanding each other completely. But we no longer have to walk in blind.
