Indiana Governor and Lt Governor Disrespect Hoosier Citizens

We at CFI Indiana are appalled by the disrespect shown to our fellow Hoosiers by our governor and lieutenant governor.

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has declared June “nuclear family month.” He said that the nuclear family, “consisting of one husband, one wife, and any … children is God’s design for the family structure and has been the foundation of society since the creation of the world.” There are many types of loving families — single parent, couples without children, those with two fathers or two mothers, as examples. Only 30% of families are “nuclear.” All families need to be respected.

Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith responded with a colorfully illustrated version of the declaration. “Take back the rainbow!” it exclaims, alongside Braun’s text, signature and seal plus a depiction of a heterosexual couple with children. June is Pride month. This is a slap in the face to LGBTQ Hoosiers.

A few days earlier, Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith said, “I hate Islam. It’s a demonic death cult.” Rhetoric that encourages violence and hatred is especially egregious when coming from our state leaders.

All people, regardless of faith or family structure deserve to live with dignity and without fear of demonization by their own elected leaders.
