Mr. Trump,

This week’s letter explaining why you should resign from the presidency concerns your hateful and unhinged rant about the terrible murders of Rob and Michelle Singer Reiner.

I have to ask, where is our national comforter? Where is the gentle voice of a national leader who can feel our pain and speak to that pain? It certainly is not in the White House from which we hear words claiming that the murder of Rob Reiner was “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.” And they were not in the words that came from you several days later when even after you had time to more carefully choose your words you said “Well, I wasn’t a fan of his at all. He was a deranged person. I thought he was very bad for our country.”

Those are the words of a hateful and vengeful person, the words of someone who is completely unable to empathize with the pain of others.

They are the words of a petty and petulant child.

They are not the words of a national comforter.

I noticed something else about those terrible words. They come close to placing the responsibility for the murders on your political supporters by suggesting that they were the result of anger generated by the Reiners’ opposition to your detestable regime. They almost justify the killings as proper payback for the Reiners’ opposition to you.

Of course we know now that the killings of the Reiners were not politically motivated. But it’s interesting that your initial reaction to the tragedy was to suggest that they were so motivated and to fail to condemn the crimes. I believe that in your heart of hearts you celebrated the horrible killings of the Reiners. Only a depraved person could celebrate such horrors.

You might be tempted to point to some of the reactions towards the terrible murder of Charlie Kirk. But I would point out that no high level elected official engaged in any statements as horrible as the ones you made about the Reiners. I would also point out that as President, as the highest official in our national government and therefore (unfortunately) the leader of our country, that you are rightly held to a higher standard than members of the public, celebrities, and other elected leaders.

It is also interesting that while you often heap scorn upon previous presidents such as Mr. Obama and Joe Biden even you must recognize that neither of those gentlemen would ever have indulged in such a hateful and emotionally unhinged rant about the death of a political opponent. Upon the death of Rush Limbaugh in 2021, a man who had heaped scorn on both Mr. Obama and then President Biden, Mr. Biden extended his condolences to the family of Mr. Limbaugh and in no way celebrated his passing. Mr. Obama did the same and even remarked that Limbaugh “gave a voice to millions of Americans”. But of course both Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden are better men than you and so that is not surprising.

Our nation is spiraling into polarization and hatred, and as a result we are seeing increasing threats of political violence. While the terrible murders of the Reiners were not politically motivated your response to their deaths feeds that cycle by blaming it on “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (a condition that could best be seen as your own derangement and that of your most rabid followers).

Rather than a constant stream of such hatred from the White House we need a national comforter and someone who can lead us away from such division and towards a recognition that Americans have more things that bring us together than divide us. We need a leader who will constantly emphasize that point and so help to make us “One nation, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all”.

You clearly are not up to the job.

It is for that reason that I once again ask for your immediate resignation.

And take JayDeeVee with you. He can’t handle it either.

Richard M. Johnson
