The Importance of Carbon Media in a RO System

Reverse osmosis (RO) membranes work efficiently by purifying water at the molecular level, but they have one major opponent: chlorine. Chlorine destroys the RO membrane by oxidising its top layer. That’s exactly where the carbon filter steps in to rescue.

Here is how carbon filters do the job :

It’s not a net; it’s a magnet:

Carbon filters proceeds through a process called adsorption. They don’t catch dirt like a physical strainer; instead, think of it as a microscopic sponge filled with millions of tiny spaces that adsorb impurities.

The Chemical trap:

As water circulates through the filtration system, the carbon filter acts like a chemical magnet. Impurities like chlorine, organic compounds and chloramines are removed from the water and locked onto the tiny caves in a carbon filter.

Protecting the core:

Chlorine is so damaging to the RO membrane as it can chemically burn holes right through it destroying its filtration power. By removing the harsh chemicals like chlorine first carbon filters protect the RO membrane.
