Black Widow (2021) Movie Review NO SPOILERS: Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz

Plot
Set during the gap between Civil War and Infinity War, the story pulls back the curtain on Natasha Romanoff’s “other” life — the one she had before the Avengers.
While in hiding, Natasha is reunited with her estranged sister, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). Their first meeting in years is a brutal, high-stakes fight in a Budapest apartment that immediately establishes their “tough-love” dynamic.
The sisters discover that the Red Room — the brainwashing program they thought was destroyed — is still operational and led by the monstrous Dreykov (Ray Winstone).
To stop it, they must break their “father,” the super-soldier Red Guardian (David Harbour), out of a Russian gulag and find their “mother,” the brilliant scientist Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz).
The movie culminates in a high-altitude battle at the Red Room’s floating base, where Natasha finally frees the other Widows and makes peace with the family that was never really “fake” to her.
The Review
- Florence Pugh’s Breakout: In 2026, it’s hard to remember a time when Yelena wasn’t a household name. Her comedic timing (the “pose” joke) and her deep vulnerability made her an instant favorite. Re-watching it now, you can see the seeds of the leader she becomes in *Thunderbolts**.
- Grounded Action: Director Cate Shortland delivered some of the most visceral hand-to-hand combat in the MCU. The Bourne-inspired choreography made Natasha feel more dangerous and human than she ever did when fighting aliens in New York.
- David Harbour’s Red Guardian: Alexei remains the MCU’s greatest “bumbling dad.” His obsession with Captain America and his ill-fitting suit provide a warmth that balances the film’s darker themes of child trafficking and brainwashing.
Summary
Black Widow is a poignant exploration of Choice and Reclaimed Identity, arguing that our past doesn’t define our future. By centering the story on “girls who were treated as a resource,” the film becomes a powerful reclamation of agency for Natasha and Yelena. In 2026, Black Widow stands as the moment the baton was passed — not just between characters, but from one era of Marvel storytelling to a more grounded, emotionally complex next chapter.
