Secure Network Components: Protecting Modern Organizational Networks

Modern organizations rely heavily on secure network infrastructures to protect sensitive data, internal systems, and communication services. As businesses continue to connect employees, customers, suppliers, and partners through digital platforms, securing network components becomes increasingly important.

To manage security effectively, organizations commonly divide their networks into different segments based on trust levels and accessibility. The most common secure network components include intranets, extranets, screened subnets (DMZs), and screened hosts.

What is an Intranet?

An intranet is a private internal network used exclusively within an organization. It functions similarly to the internet but is accessible only to authorized users inside the organization.

Intranets often provide internal services such as:

Email systems

Employee portals

File sharing

Internal websites

Collaboration platforms

Unlike public internet services, intranet resources are hosted on internal servers and are not accessible to outside users.

Example of an Intranet

A company may use an intranet portal where employees can:

Access HR documents

Submit leave requests

View internal announcements

Communicate securely with coworkers

Since the intranet is private, unauthorized external users cannot access these resources directly.

What is an Extranet?

An extranet combines features of both the internet and an intranet. It is a controlled section of a private network that allows limited access to authorized external users such as:

Business partners

Suppliers

Vendors

Distributors

Remote sales teams

Selected customers

Extranets help organizations collaborate securely with external entities without exposing the entire internal network.

Example of an Extranet

A manufacturing company may provide suppliers with access to an extranet portal where they can:

Track inventory levels

Submit invoices

View purchase orders

Coordinate shipments

Only approved users with proper authentication can access the extranet.

Understanding Screened Subnets (DMZ)

A screened subnet, previously known as a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), is a specialized network segment designed for systems that must be accessible to low trust or public users.

DMZs create a protective buffer zone between the public internet and the organization’s internal network.

Common systems placed inside a DMZ include:

Public web servers

Email servers

DNS servers

FTP servers

If attackers compromise a system inside the DMZ, the internal network still remains protected by additional firewall layers.

Example of a DMZ

When users visit a company’s public website, they interact with a web server located inside the DMZ instead of directly accessing the internal corporate network.

This separation reduces the risk of attackers reaching sensitive internal systems.

DMZ Deployment Methods

Organizations commonly deploy DMZs using two different approaches.

1. Two Firewall Deployment

This method uses:

One firewall between the internet and the DMZ

Another firewall between the DMZ and the internal network

The DMZ acts as a buffer zone, while both firewalls filter and monitor traffic entering and leaving the network.

Example

An e-commerce company may place its public web server in the DMZ while protecting customer databases behind a second firewall inside the internal network.

2. Multihomed Firewall Deployment

A multihomed firewall uses a single firewall device with multiple network interfaces connected to:

The internet

The DMZ

The intranet

This design simplifies management while still separating network segments securely.

Example

A small business may use a multihomed firewall to manage internet access, public services, and internal systems using a single security appliance.

What is a Screened Host?

A screened host is a firewall protected system positioned near the edge of a network. It acts as an intermediary between external users and internal systems.

All inbound traffic passes through the screened host before reaching trusted internal resources.

The screened host performs several important security functions:

Filters incoming traffic

Acts as a proxy server

Hides internal system identities

Blocks malicious requests

Example of a Screened Host

An organization may use a proxy server as a screened host to inspect web traffic before allowing users to access internal applications.

This helps prevent unauthorized access and cyberattacks.

Importance of Secure Network Segmentation

Secure network segmentation improves overall cybersecurity by separating systems based on trust levels and access requirements.
