Dutch Inburgering A2 Exam Preparation: My Experience, Tips & AI Prompts

After completing all of the Dutch Inburgering A2 exams, I thought it would be useful to share what actually worked for me.

This is not an article about exam questions or shortcuts. I won’t tell you what will appear in the exam because honestly, I have no idea 😄.

Instead, I want to share how I prepared, which resources helped me, and how I used free AI tools to create an almost unlimited amount of practice material.

If you’re preparing for the Dutch Inburgering A2 exams, hopefully some of these tips will save you time, reduce stress, and maybe even make studying a little less boring.

Why AI Became My Study Partner 🤖

When I started preparing for the exams, I quickly realized that the official practice materials were useful but limited.

After doing the same practice questions several times, I started remembering the answers rather than actually learning Dutch.

That’s where AI tools became incredibly useful.

Instead of practicing the same questions repeatedly, I could generate new exercises that followed the same style and difficulty level as the real exams.

The secret is simple:

❌ Don’t just ask AI to create questions.

First, train it with examples.

The more context you provide, the better the results become.

I strongly recommend creating a separate project in ChatGPT or any other AI tool that supports file uploads and long conversations.

For each exam, create a dedicated project and upload:

• Official practice questions
• Sample answers
• Notes about the A2 level
• Vocabulary lists
• Exam instructions

🟢 This takes only a few minutes, but it dramatically improves the quality of the exercises generated by AI.

The Master Prompt I Used ⭐️

Before generating exercises, I usually gave the AI some context similar to this:

You are helping me prepare for the Dutch Inburgering A2 exam. Create realistic practice exercises that match the official exam style and difficulty. Keep the Dutch language strictly at A2 level. After I answer, evaluate my response, explain mistakes in English, and suggest improvements. Focus on helping me pass the exam rather than teaching advanced Dutch.

Once the AI understood the context, I could use more specific prompts for each exam.

Reading Exam (Lezen)

The reading exam was one of the easiest exams to practice with AI.

I copied several reading exercises from official practice exams and uploaded them into my AI project.

This helped the AI understand:

• Question style
• Vocabulary level
• Typical text lengths
• Answer formats

After that, I could generate unlimited reading exercises.

⚠️ One thing I noticed is that if you don’t explicitly mention “A2 level”, AI often creates exercises that are either too easy or much harder than the actual exam.

Always specify the level.

I passed the Reading Exam with a score of: 9

Listening Exam (Luisteren)

This was probably the exam where AI surprised me the most.

Most modern AI tools can now speak and listen. I used voice conversations to simulate listening exercises. The AI would read questions aloud, and I would answer verbally. This felt much more realistic than simply reading practice materials.

I also uploaded examples from official practice exams so the AI could better understand the expected format.

The more examples I provided, the more realistic the exercises became.

I passed the Listening Exam with a score of: 9

Speaking Exam (Spreken)

The speaking exam was the one that made me feel the most nervous.

What helped me was creating a habit:

1. Think of an answer.
2. Say it out loud.
3. Let AI evaluate it.

At first, I typed my answers. Later, I started using voice mode.

Most AI tools can automatically convert speech into text, which made the practice process much faster.

One thing that helped me a lot was speaking before looking at corrections.

That forced me to think in Dutch instead of translating everything from English.

My Result

I passed the Speaking Exam with a score of: 7

Writing Exam (Schrijven)

For writing, AI became my personal teacher.

I copied several sample writing exercises from practice exams and used them to train the AI.

The generated exercises were often surprisingly similar to what I encountered during preparation.

In the actual exam, you’ll be writing by hand. 📝 I spent part of my preparation writing answers on paper. This helped build speed and confidence.

It sounds old-fashioned, but your hand will thank you later.

KNM Exam (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij)

The KNM exam is slightly different because it focuses on knowledge about Dutch society rather than language skills.

For this exam, I found that providing background information to AI worked very well.

Instead of only uploading questions, I also uploaded notes about:

• Dutch healthcare
• Education
• Government services
• Work culture
• Housing
• Social norms
• Dutch History

I would still recommend studying official practice exams because they give a very good impression of the real exam style.

I passed the KNM Exam with a score of: 8

Other Resources That Helped Me

AI was extremely useful, but it wasn’t the only thing I used. This is one of the articles that helped me to initiate the preparations and was very useful to make the strategy.

Online Courses

I personally used courses from Inburgering Online. I’m not affiliated with them in any way.

What worked for me was completing a course during the final two weeks before each exam and doing as many practice exercises as possible.

YouTube

There are now dozens of excellent YouTube channels focused on Dutch language learning and Inburgering preparation.

Many videos are short, practical, and easy to watch during lunch breaks or while commuting.

Facebook Groups

I joined several Facebook groups related to Dutch exams.

People regularly share study tips, experiences, and useful resources. Just remember that not everything posted online is correct, so always verify important information using official sources.

Duolingo App

Another useful tool for daily practice is the Duolingo app. It helps build consistency by encouraging short, regular practice sessions that improve vocabulary, grammar, and reading habits over time. While preparing for my exams, I maintained a streak of more than 200 days, which really helped me stay in touch with the language every single day without feeling overwhelmed.

Even a few minutes of practice daily adds up and makes a noticeable difference when preparing for A2 level exams.

Official Practice Exams

If I had to recommend only one resource besides AI, it would be the official practice exams.

They are the closest thing you’ll get to the actual exam experience.

Use them not only for studying but also for training your AI assistant.

My Favorite Last-Minute Revision Trick

Before every exam, I created a one-page summary sheet.

The goal wasn’t to learn new information. The goal was to refresh what I already knew. AI can help with this too.

Prompt I Used

Create a one-page revision sheet for the Dutch Inburgering A2 exam based on everything we have studied together. Include only the most important grammar, vocabulary, common mistakes, and exam tips.

I usually reviewed this summary while waiting before the exam started.

It’s much more effective than trying to read an entire textbook at the last minute.

The Order I Would Recommend Taking the Exams

One question I get quite often is whether the order of the exams actually matters.

Technically, you can take them in any order you want. However, if I had to do everything again today, I would follow this sequence:

1. Reading (Lezen)
2. Listening (Luisteren)
3. Writing (Schrijven)
4. Speaking (Spreken)
5. KNM (Kennis van de Nederlandse Maatschappij)

My reasoning is simple. The reading and listening exams help you build your overall Dutch comprehension. Once you become comfortable understanding Dutch texts and conversations, writing and speaking become much easier because you have already been exposed to a lot of vocabulary, sentence structures, and common expressions.

I actually took the speaking exam much earlier because I wanted to complete it before the exam format changed. Since that change has already happened, I no longer see a strong reason to prioritize speaking first. For most people, I think it makes more sense to build confidence with reading and listening before moving on to the productive skills like writing and speaking.

I would also recommend leaving the KNM exam until the end. This might sound a bit strange, but the longer you live in the Netherlands, the more KNM knowledge you naturally pick up without actively studying. Things like healthcare, municipalities, public transport, work culture, schools, taxes, and everyday Dutch habits become familiar simply because you interact with Dutch society on a daily basis. After living here for a couple of years, you may be surprised by how many KNM questions already feel like common sense.

Of course, everyone’s situation is different, so treat this as a friendly suggestion rather than a strict rule. But if you’re starting from scratch and wondering where to begin, this is the order I would personally recommend.

Final Thoughts

The A2 Inburgering exams are absolutely achievable.

I managed to pass all exams on my first attempt using a combination of official materials, online resources, YouTube videos, and free AI tools.

The biggest lesson I learned is that AI works best when you provide good context.

Don’t just open ChatGPT and say “teach me Dutch.” Spend a few minutes setting things up properly, upload examples, explain your goals, and guide the conversation.

The quality of the output will be dramatically better. Most importantly, don’t wait until the last week to start preparing. A little practice every day is far more effective than a huge study session the night before.
