Secret Plenary Adoption: A Form of Premeditated Child Abuse

Adoption is often portrayed as a noble act, offering children a chance at a better life. However, in truth, secret plenary adoption is one of the most devastating betrayals a child can experience.

This practice, which permanently severs a child’s legal and familial ties without their knowledge or consent, should be recognized for what it truly is: voluntary, premeditated child abuse and a crime against humanity.

The psychological trauma, identity erasure, and lifelong consequences inflicted on adoptees through such deceitful measures demand urgent legal and societal condemnation.

Psychological Devastation

Children have an innate need to understand their origins. Psychologists and trauma experts emphasize that severing a child’s connection to their biological roots inflicts deep, lasting wounds.

When adoption is kept secret through falsified birth certificates, lies about parentage, or legal erasure of biological family ties, the child is robbed of their fundamental right to identity, heritage, and medical history.

Studies on adoptees who discover their true origins later in life reveal much higher rates of depression, anxiety, and feelings of betrayal compared to those raised with transparency under an open guardianship.

Closed adoption, touted as an act of love, is in fact an act of psychological violence, forcing the child into a false reality. Deep invalidation on a systemic level.

Premeditated Nature of the Crime

Unlike impulsive acts of harm, secret plenary adoption is calculated and deliberate. Real parents and adopters, agencies, and legal systems that facilitate this deception knowingly choose to:

• Falsify legal documents (e.g., issuing new birth certificates listing adoptive parents as biological).

Legal and Ethical Implications

Many countries have begun recognizing forced adoption as a human rights violation (e.g., Australia’s apology for historic forced adoptions, Ireland’s investigations into Mother and Baby Homes). However, plenary adoption remains legal in many places, despite its similarly coercive nature (for the child, it is always forced and degrading).

Ethically, this practice violates:

• Basic human dignity. No person should have their lineage stolen from them.
• Medical rights. Denying adoptees access to their genetic health history can have life-threatening consequences.

If lying about paternity is considered reproductive coercion, and identity theft is a crime, then secret plenary adoption should be classified as both.

Call for Justice

In nearly all cases, adoption is not “giving a child a better life,” it is state-sanctioned identity theft and psychological abuse.

The trauma inflicted by such deception lasts a lifetime, leaving victims to grapple with betrayal, loss, inability to trust, and fractured self-perception.

This practice must be:

• Legally reclassified as fraud and child abuse.
• Banned outright, with full transparency mandated in all situations of guardianship.
• Retroactively corrected, allowing adoptees access to sealed records, reclaiming their real names, and obtaining reparations for harm.

No child should be stripped of their name, family, history, and authentic self. To do so is the opposite of love; it is a cruel, premeditated crime.

Society must stop romanticizing adoption and the lies and secrecy surrounding it, and start recognizing it for the human rights violation it truly is.

Anything less is complicity in systemic abuse.
