U.S. Troops Thwart Drone Attack in Iraq, First Incident in Months

U.S. troops stationed in Iraq recently intercepted and thwarted a drone attack outside a base in the country, marking the first such incident involving American forces targeted by Iranian-backed groups since February. According to Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the attempted attacks occurred on April 22 when two drones were deployed by malign militia groups associated with Iran. Fortunately, these attacks were unsuccessful, with the U.S. military taking defensive measures to protect its personnel.

The attempted drone strikes specifically targeted the Al-Asad air base located in Iraq’s western Anbar province. This incident follows closely after rockets were fired towards U.S. forces stationed in northeastern Syria from northern Iraq just the day before. In response, a coalition aircraft destroyed the rocket system, described by Ryder as an act of self-defense against a “failed rocket attack.” While these recent events indicate a resurgence in hostile actions against U.S. forces in the region, the military has emphasized its readiness to defend against such threats.

Since early February, there had been a relative lull in attacks on U.S. forces in the Middle East following retaliatory airstrikes by the United States against targets in Iraq and Syria associated with Iranian-backed militias and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Prior to this period of calm, U.S. forces had faced near-daily rocket and drone strikes since mid-October, which coincided with heightened tensions in the region stemming from conflict involving American ally Israel and the Hamas militia group in the Gaza Strip.
