Bold Vs Mean

Are they bold or just mean?

In 2024, I realized something that hit me like a lightning strike. I used to think blunt people were just mean people. We’ve all met them. The ones who won’t think twice before pointing out a mistake. The ones who don’t hesitate to make a room uncomfortable.

For a long time, I saw them as bullies who used honesty as a weapon to hurt people’s feelings.

Then, I watched Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” Throughout the show, Jerry has a very specific way of talking to his guests. At first, his approach mirrored my exact image of a “not nice” person. I remember sitting there thinking, “How does he still have friends? How do these people talk to him after he’s so blunt?”

And then it hit me. They aren’t mean. Their social padding is just incredibly thin compared to everyone else. They got no bounce.

They aren’t bullies. They are BOLD.

For some of you, this might seem like an obvious realization. For me, it was life-changing.

I’ll tell you why. Being bold forces you to be uncomfortable. When you face a bold person, they pull you right into that discomfort with them.

But discomfort is exactly where the growth is. When you are uncomfortable, you learn things about yourself that you never imagined you didn’t know.

That is the hidden genius of Jerry’s show. His guests are quite literally trapped in a moving car with him, forced to navigate his bold, unfiltered questions.

Because they can’t hide behind polite small talk, they answer with incredible depth — sometimes entirely to their own surprise.

Discomfort becomes a treasure hunt.

Now, I actively seek out bold people. I love their presence. I crave the moments they make me uncomfortable, because I know that on the other side of that discomfort is a version of myself I haven’t met yet.

Who knows what I’ll uncover next.

Who is the “bold” person in your life who accidentally helped you grow?
