Why Queries Deserve Labels

Netflix didn’t win because it had more movies. It won because it labeled them. Genres, themes, binge-watch patterns, completion rates even which thumbnail got you to click. Netflix labeled everything, not just the movies.

And that was the breakthrough: context made content usable.

Once movies were labeled, Netflix could recommend Money Heist to millions of people who never would’ve searched for it. Context turned a Spanish drama into a global hit.

It’s the same pattern behind every big leap in tech:

• Google works because pages are labeled and ranked.
• GPS works because maps are labeled with streets and routes.
• ChatGPT works because text was labeled, making it learnable at scale.

Every breakthrough started the same way: once information became findable, it became usable.

Analytics hasn’t had its Netflix moment yet.

In healthcare especially, queries still live in isolation, hard to find, hard to trust, and rebuilt again and again.

So what would tagging a query look like?

Take something simple: pulling patients with diabetes who were prescribed Ozempic.

Instead of staring at cryptic codes buried in SQL, imagine if the query carried its own tags:

• Condition: Diabetes (ICD10: E11)
• Medication: Ozempic (NDC: 00169–4132–12)
• Tables used: claims_raw, dim_rx, dim_member
• Business Rules: cohort=adults 18+, 2+ diabetes episodes
• Run time: 32 seconds
• last_run: 2025–09–05

Suddenly the query isn’t a black box. You can see the meaning, the source, the performance, the people behind it, and where else it lives.

And once it’s tagged, it stops being a one-off script. It becomes an asset, reusable, shareable, trustworthy.

That’s where the real speed shows up: analysts spend their time analyzing, not just querying.

For the past 9 months we have been working on this.
