Spring in Yamakoshi: Where Snow and Sakura Meet

Spring in Yamakoshi does not arrive suddenly all at once. It comes slowly, overlapping with winter little by little.

Snow still remains on the ground, quietly melting under the soft sunlight. Right beside it, pale pink cherry blossoms begin to bloom. Winter says goodbye while spring slowly steps in. In this moment, when snow and sakura exist together, there is a quiet richness that can only be found in Yamakoshi.

What Snow and Sakura Teach Us

As the snow melts, ponds for koi fish begin to appear again.

Driving through the village, you can see signs of melting snow everywhere — on the mountainsides, around the ponds, and along the roads. In what was once a completely white landscape, the color of the earth and the green of the grass slowly return. It is the moment when you finally feel: spring has arrived.

When I lived in the city, I rarely noticed the changing of the seasons so carefully. Even when cherry blossoms bloomed, I saw them only as a normal spring event.

But Satoyama is different.

The snow becomes thinner. The sound of water grows louder. Birds begin singing again. These small changes, layered one by one, create the feeling that spring is finally here.

Whenever I see this landscape, I feel the same is true for developing business in rural areas.

When people try to start something new in the countryside, many assume they need to remove the old and replace it with something new. But in reality, ignoring local customs, human relationships, and administrative systems rarely works.
