Jane became a nocturnal soft-focus conservator, a specialist hired by forgotten towns to preserve the last warmth of faces before memory let them go. She worked in a narrow room above an abandoned portrait studio, where the walls breathed with the faint blush of old skin, dusk, and dust. Every evening she unlocked a cabinet of unfinished names and listened for the quietest one.

Her tools were unusual: a velvet cloth, a brass lamp, a bowl of lukewarm water, and a small notebook filled with descriptions no one else could verify. She never restored a face sharply. Sharpness, she believed, belonged to ownership, and the people who came to her had already escaped being possessed. Instead, she softened the edges of their absence until sorrow could approach without fear.

One night, a town brought her a single blank mask wrapped in brown paper. No one remembered whose it was, only that everyone felt gentler when passing it. Jane placed it beneath the lamp. Slowly, a presence rose from the surface: not a portrait, not a ghost, but the feeling of being almost recognized in a dream.

She wrote: “This person was loved by someone who forgot the reason but kept the tenderness.” The words warmed the room. Outside, rain tapped on the roof like fingers asking permission to enter. Jane lifted the velvet cloth and covered the mask again, allowing it to remain incomplete.
