As far as the current entries in the list are concerned, the Mesoamerican area of folk metal-dom is a hotspot of extreme metal styles such as death and black metal. Ocelotl, on the other hand, is a deviation — the band is notable in that their tempos and rhythms appear to be more groove-derived and progressive.

What is also interesting with their music is that they throw in a lot of indigenous Mesoamerican instruments into their tracks such as the teponaztli, flutes, (and shell trumpets I think), and other percs like shakers, drums, etc. Due to the band’s weaving of a less extreme though still highly aggressive metal style and pluralized folk instruments, they stand out. Moreover, in contrast to others from the same cultural region, Ocelotl brings more pronounced folk features to the listening experience.
