“CareEase bridges that gap — so your loved ones are cared for, even when you can’t be there physically.”

Project Overview

What is CareEase?

CareEase - is a home nursing service app designed to make elderly care more accessible, reliable, and stress-free for both seniors and their families. With the growing demand for quality home care, CareEase provides a convenient, trustworthy solution that connects users with professional caregivers.

The App simplifies the entire caregiving process by offering features such as on-demand nursing services, scheduling flexibility, real-time updates, and secure communication between families and caregivers.

The Problem

As the aging population continues to grow, the need for reliable and accessible home nursing services has never been greater.

The business wants a solution to make users more accessible, reliable for both seniors and their families.

Roles and responsibilities

My role is to create an intuitive and user-friendly interface that meets the needs of both seniors and caregivers. my responsibilities included everything end-to-end, following all the aspects of design thinking, conducting user research, wireframing, prototyping, and testing. This study explores the design decisions, challenges, and solutions implemented to make CareEase a truly impactful product for elderly care.

Target Audience Adults with Elderly Parents: (Age 28–40) Patients Recovering from Surgery or Illness: (Age 45–80)

I applied the design thinking process to create an effective and user-centered solution for this problem.

01.Empathize

To design the best solution, I put myself in the users’ shoes. By doing both secondary and primary research, I got a clear understanding of their real needs and challenges.

Secondary research

Before searching online, I first set clear research goals to stay focused and understand the problem better. This helped me avoid getting lost in too much information and ensured that I gathered only the most useful insights for creating the right solution.

Goals of secondary Research 🔍 Understanding difficulties in homecare for elderly people. 🔍 Analyze the consequences of delayed or insufficient care, increased hospital visits, and additional stress on patients and their families. 🔍 Finding out insufficient quality of care. 🔍 Evaluate the Role of Caregiver Training and Certification. 🔍 Understanding communication barriers between patient and healthcare professionals.

With clear goals in mind, I began exploring online articles, research papers, competitor analysis, case studies, and government healthcare organization websites to gather valuable insights.

Secondary Research insights 🔍 Users struggle to find the right caregivers, face difficulties booking via call, and deal with uncertain availability and timing. 🔍 One of the most critical challenges in homecare is caregiver coordination and communication. 🔍 Families feel uncertain about the quality and consistency of care.

Primary Research

After going through all the secondary research like reading articles, reports, competitor analysis, I got a good idea of the general problem and market trends. it was now time to validate them by obtaining first hand information. so I moved on to primary research to get fresh insights straight from the users. I wanted to understand their actual needs, pain points, and behaviour. For this, I planned user interviews

For the interviews, I first made a simple questionnaire focusing on the real problem I was trying to solve. After that, I reached out and found 5 people between the age of 25 to 60 who matched the user group I was targeting.

Some of the questions that I asked the users are, 🔍 How do you currently find and schedule caregivers for home visits? 🔍 Have you ever faced difficulty booking a caregiver at the time you needed? 🔍 How do you ensure the caregiver visiting your home is trustworthy and qualified? 🔍 Have you ever had an emergency where you couldn’t reach a caregiver quickly? 🔍 How satisfied are you with the care provided at home compared to hospital visits? 🔍 What kind of communication issues have you been facing with the homecare team? 🔍 How do you track and manage caregiver visits?

Talking to real users helped me fill the gaps that secondary research couldn’t cover. It gave me clarity on what people are truly facing and what they expect. Now that I’ve got everyone’s answers, it was time to make sense of the interview data gathered.

02.Define

It was time to sit down and figure out what the real problem was. I went through everything users shared and started spotting common patterns, repeated issues, and things that really bothered them. The goal was to get a clear idea of what exactly I need to solve for them.

I wrote down all the key points, Pain points, goals, and observations on sticky notes and started grouping similar ideas together.

After analyzing the insights collected, I observed common patterns of goals and pain points for the majority of the target audience. Putting those insights, I created one persona which will be my primary persona.

Despite identifying the primary goals and challenges of my users, it was essential to chart their entire journey to pinpoint exactly where these pain points occur.

From the scratch till the end of the post care process. i mapped out some real issues that a primary user persona experienced based on insights gathered from users.

💡 I identified specific areas where the user experience could be enhanced.

Communication barriers: there is a lot of communication gaps between caregivers and family. this leads to inconsistent treatment, scheduling, and any emergency occurs. Inexperienced Caregivers: Some caregivers are not trained professionals. and this may affect patient health and any complex medical needs . Irregular Updates: No consistent updates on patient health, tests, scans. which is affecting progress of health. When Scheduling Caregivers: No tracking system on caregiver shifts, and health progress.

03.Ideate

By analyzing the user’s journey through the experience map, I created Task flows illustrating the various paths users take to achieve specific goals within the application.

1.Scheduling experienced Caregiver: To book an appointment, the first thing user does is Scheduling the experienced caregiver. the flow of the app will help users to book caregivers based on their needs. Where users were struggling Before.

2. Caregiver Visit Verification: After booking an appointment and the caregiver has completed the visit, users can verify the caregiver’s service and attendance by reviewing details in the ‘My Appointments’ section.

3. Caregiver Communication Hub : After verification, users can easily connect with caregivers through the Caregiver Communication Hub for updates and care plan changes, solving previous communication struggles.

After analyzing the user flows and identifying the primary entry point screens, I Created a comprehensive sitemap. This sitemap provided a clear overview of the application’s structure and navigation, enabling me to understand how users would interact with various sections and features.

04. Design

During the design phase, I started with low-fidelity wireframes to visualize the app’s structure, gradually refining them into detailed high-fidelity screens and creating interactive prototypes for user testing.

i Began creating multiple sketch iterations for each screen, allowing for rapid exploration and refinement. This approach enabled me to quickly visualize ideas, identify potential usability issues.

After finalizing the low-fidelity wireframes, I enhanced them by incorporating actual content and refining the components, transitioning them into high-fidelity designs that closely resemble the final product.​

Style Guide — Color & Typography 🎨 🚀

​To craft a color palette that would evoke a positive mood in users interacting with the app, I assembled a mood board featuring images of hospital equipments, hospital interiors and Nature. The predominant hues extracted were light and dark greens, colors that commonly associated with health, growth, and tranquility.

Typography

Choosing the right typefaces is essential in design as it impacts readability, user engagement, and the app’s overall feel, ensuring content is clear while also setting the right tone and enhancing the user experience.

Integrating Dm Sans for headings and Nunito for body text, enhances readability and conveys a sense of trustworthiness. DM Sans is a modern, clean, and highly legible sans-serif typeface. and Nunito is a warm, rounded sans-serif that’s highly readable, especially on mobile.

Applying the style guide to my final high-fidelity wireframes, I started creating the UI mockups.

05.Test

After creating the live prototype, I ran usability tests with real users to observe their interactions and gather feedback, which helped me identify areas for improvement and refine the design.

I conducted moderated usability testing sessions with five participants who represented my target audience and selected middle aged seniors to test the app.

📝 To test usability, I created task-based scenarios and a questionnaire to gather feedback as users interacted with key app features.

📝 You have a minor pain in your knee that requires professional attention. Using the app, schedule a caregiver for physiotherapy at your home tomorrow at 9:00 AM.

While testing the app, I gave this task to middle-aged Senior to try booking a caregiver, but he found it hard to select a date because the calendar dates looked too small and unclear due to his weak eyesight. He mentioned that it was difficult to focus on the tiny numbers, which made the task frustrating.

After: Improved date visibility with a clearer layout, helping elderly users easily view and select appointment dates.

After several iterations, the date picker was made clearer and more touch-friendly, helping users complete bookings with ease.

Problems Solved:

  • Problem: Patients often struggle to find healthcare services that match their specific needs and timing.
  • Solution: The app allows patients to schedule a caregiver based on their preferences, such as the type of care, date & time.

Problems Solved:

  • Problem: Patients or family members may not know if the caregiver actually showed up or completed the service properly.
  • Solution: The app allows users to verify visit, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Problems Solved:

  • Problem: Patients may have questions after a session but no easy way to reach out.
  • Solution: Users can send a request to connect with their caregiver, and once the request is accepted, they can directly message them through the app.

Learnings & Takeaway

One of my key learnings was realizing how crucial convenience is when it comes to home nursing services. With CareEase, booking a caregiver, scheduling visits became simple and quick. It saved us from the usual hassle of making endless calls and worrying about finding someone reliable at the last minute.

Working on this project taught me the importance of prioritizing features based on user needs and business goals. With limited time, I learned how to identify what truly adds value to the user and focus on those core prioritized features.
