Why MSU Denver Hasn’t Been Hit by Federal Funding Cuts — Yet

Recently, our university president shared an important update: “MSU Denver has not been impacted by any federal funding cuts related to executive orders — as of today”. At a time when many progressive institutions are being politically targeted for their DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) efforts, it’s a relief, but it also raises a question:

Why have we been spared?

As a proud Roadrunner and a non-traditional student, I’m both grateful and curious. MSU Denver is proudly inclusive, student-focused, and community-driven. We don’t just check boxes. We serve people, many of whom are first-generation, immigrant, low-income, or simply trying to rewrite their life story through education.

So why aren’t we seeing the same attacks that are hitting schools in Florida, Texas, or even some California campuses?

Here’s what I think is happening.

Our HSI designation is tied to Title V of the Higher Education Act. That funding can’t just be wiped out with the stroke of a pen. Taking it away would hurt thousands of Hispanic and Latinx students across the country and that would come with political consequences. Even during a culture war, some lines aren’t crossed easily.

MSU Denver Flies Under the Radar.

Unlike the Ivy League or national-name schools, we aren’t always in the spotlight. That’s not a bad thing right now. It means we can keep doing the real work, helping students thrive, without being used as a political talking point.

We Speak Student Success, Not Sound Bites.

Our DEI work is smart. It’s tied to student outcomes, retention, and job readiness. In other words, it’s hard to attack programs that help students graduate, find careers, and break cycles of poverty. MSU Denver doesn’t scream ideology, it builds opportunity.

Colorado Has Our Back.

Unlike states that are actively rolling back DEI and targeting marginalized students, Colorado invests in equity. That state-level support gives us a cushion. It’s easier to stand tall when you know your local government isn’t trying to pull the rug out from under you.

Politics Move Slow, But We Need to Stay Ready.

Executive orders don’t go into full effect overnight. Bureaucracy takes time. Legal challenges can stall enforcement. But that doesn’t mean we’re safe forever. We have to stay alert, stay engaged, and defend the values that make MSU Denver the kind of school people “want” to attend — not just the one they end up at.

MSU Denver is a beautiful contradiction. It’s progressive, practical, and people-centered — a university that believes in second chances, first-generation pride, and building bridges across communities. We might not be in the national headlines, but that doesn’t mean we’re immune.

Let’s take this moment of calm as a chance to prepare, not panic. Let’s show the country what real inclusion looks like: thoughtful, intentional, and undeniable.
