OM: Know about it: EMEA & APAC

In the world of global business, two acronyms dominate the landscape: APAC and EMEA. Whether you are expanding a startup, managing a supply chain, or analyzing market trends, understanding which countries fall into these regions is essential.

While there is no single “official” list (different organizations like the UN or the World Bank use slightly different groupings), the following provides the most common breakdown of these two massive regions.

1. The APAC Region (Asia-Pacific)

The Asia-Pacific region is the powerhouse of global growth, home to more than half of the world’s population. It is usually divided into four major subregions.

East Asia

  • China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Mongolia, Hong Kong (SAR), and Macao (SAR).

Southeast Asia

  • Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Brunei, and Timor-Leste.

South Asia

  • India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, and Afghanistan.

Oceania & The Pacific

  • Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Tonga, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, Tuvalu, Nauru.

2. The EMEA Region (Europe, Middle East, & Africa)

EMEA is one of the most diverse business regions in the world, spanning three continents and dozens of time zones.

Europe

  • Western & Central: United Kingdom, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Czechia, Hungary.
  • Southern: Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey.
  • Northern: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland.
  • Latvia, and Eastern: Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, and the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania).

Middle East

  • Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq and Iran.

Africa

  • Northern: Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya.
  • Sub-Saharan: South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana, Angola, Tanzania, Uganda, Senegal, and many more.

Key Regional Overlaps

It is worth noting that some countries are “swing” players depending on the company:

  • Central Asia: Countries like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are sometimes grouped with EMEA (under the “E” for Eastern Europe) and other times with APAC.
  • Turkey: Almost always grouped with EMEA, often acting as the bridge between Europe and the Middle East.

Why These Groupings Matter

Businesses use these lists to organize sales teams, determine shipping logistics, and set regional pricing. For example, a company might have a “Head of APAC” based in Singapore and a “Head of EMEA” based in London or Dubai.

In Short Overview

The APAC Region (Asia-Pacific)

APAC is the world’s fastest-growing economic zone. It is typically divided into these key clusters:

  • South Asia: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Maldives.
