Data Science vs IT Audit: The Career Dilemma I’m Living Through

At some point in your career, you face a question that no course, degree, or mentor can answer for you: Do you continue on the path you’re already on, or do you pivot toward the path you feel drawn to? This is the dilemma I’ve been navigating over the past year—Data Science vs. IT Audit.

Both fields are compelling in their own right. One focuses on controls, governance, and risk; the other focuses on data, insights, and decision-making. Strangely enough, my academic and professional journey sits right at the intersection of these two worlds. This is the story of that journey so far.

Where It Started: A Technical Foundation My academic background began with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. This combination exposed me to three very different but powerful ways of thinking: -Mathematics taught me structured problem-solving. -Statistics taught me how to interpret uncertainty and find patterns. -Computer Science taught me how systems and software actually operate. -During my undergraduate years, I immersed myself in core subjects like -Data Structures, Object-Oriented Programming, and Ethical Hacking. At the same time, statistics introduced me to regression and probability—concepts that would later become the bedrock of data science.

But like many students, I didn’t yet know how these pieces would eventually click together.

The Business Bridge: An MBA To understand how technology interacts with the real world, I pursued an MBA in IT and Finance. This was the first time I started seeing technology not just as code, but as a business enabler. -I explored Fintech, Blockchain, and Data Warehousing, becoming fascinated by questions like: -How do digital businesses manage risk at scale? -How does data influence high-stakes strategic decisions? -The intersection of technology and business strategy was the space I wanted to inhabit, but the exact "role" was still a mystery.

My First Corporate Role: IT Audit After my MBA, I entered the corporate world through IT Audit and Risk Advisory. My work involves evaluating how organizations manage technology risks and ensuring proper controls are in place.

I work daily with frameworks like ISO 27001, SOC 2, and PCI DSS. In simple terms, I look at a system and ask: -Are the right controls in place? -Are processes secure and compliant? -Where are the gaps that could lead to failure?

IT Audit gave me exposure to enterprise-level governance and strengthened my skills in gap analysis and risk evaluation. But over time, I noticed a familiar pull returning.

The Pull Toward Data Alongside my primary job, I began exploring data analytics. What started as curiosity—learning Python, SQL, and Tableau—slowly became a passion. I began working on analytical projects such as: -Customer segmentation using RFM analysis. -Demand forecasting and churn analysis. -Cost-benefit and break-even analysis.

The exciting part wasn’t just building the dashboards; it was answering the "Why." Why are customers leaving? What factors actually drive sales? Data analysis felt like solving real-world puzzles.

The Real Question The dilemma isn’t really "Which field is better?" The real question is: Which type of problem do I want to spend years solving? Do I want to focus on reducing risk (ensuring systems are secure)? Or do I want to focus on creating insight (using data to influence decisions)? One path is about protection; the other is about projection.

Where I Am Today Right now, I’m exploring both sides carefully. My current role has given me a deep understanding of technology risk and enterprise systems. Simultaneously, I am building my technical stack in SQL and Python. I’m particularly drawn to roles that combine these two worlds—Business Analytics, Product Analytics, or Data-Driven Audit. These positions sit in that "sweet spot" of data, technology, and business strategy.

Final Thoughts If you’re early in your career and feeling uncertain about your direction, you’re not alone. Career dilemmas aren’t a sign of confusion; they’re a sign that you’re thinking seriously about the kind of problems you want to solve. For now, my journey continues—somewhere between the world of IT Audit and the world of Data Science. And I suspect the most interesting path will be the one that connects them both.
