The Ecology of Wudu

I think often about Allah commanding our Prophet, through Angel Gabriel, to perform ritual washing before making prayer (salat) five times per day, with such a scarce resource: water. Mind you, wudu is only ritual. If you are unclean, you need to wash with soap before your wudu. That uses even more water. And, if you are getting up for the dawn prayer and made love the night before, ghusl is prescribed, which is an obligatory shower. More water flows every day for prayers than can possibly be measured.

True, if one is in a location that has no water, it is permitted to make wudu instead with sand or dust, a procedure called tayammun. But if one considers that the entire population is busy using significant amounts of water for wudu and ghusl, not for drinking, cooking, irrigation, nor for watering animals — is wudu, then, an extravagance? No, because prayer is a basic need of the soul. And wudu is an integral part of Islamic prayer.

Some would consider this an intrinsic disadvantage since Islam was revealed on the Arabian Peninsula, a place with chronic water shortages. Here in the U.S. water is plentiful and we think nothing of using large quantities for wudu. Long ago an elder Somali sister showed me it is possible to make wudu from a single glass of water, and I recently came to understand that this is the common practice in much of the world. I believe we should all adopt this practice. Because clean water is an increasingly rare resource, and making efforts now to conserve will have an impact.

So consider, my fellow Muslims, that the well of Zam Zam continues to provide water for us in Mecca from the time of Hajar and Ibraham to the present day. But we still need to husband this precious resource and not take our access for granted. We can increase our awareness and our habits. Allah is the All-Knower, the Most Wise. Ameen
