West Virginia Way

The unfortunate image we portray.

West Virginia is an absolutely beautiful state. We are known for our beautiful hills and amazing scenery. Well, that’s at least what I thought. it turns out that when most people picture West Virginia, they imagine a bunch of people living in the hills playing banjos.

Nice to know.

The truth is, there are a lot of shacks in rural areas in West Virginia. We are in an impoverished state. I can almost understand how we gained our image.

Not everyone from West Virginia, however, lives in shacks. Most of us own shoes. We are viewed as Hillbillies or Appalachian people. I'm not saying that is not accurate. It is the image that we have obscured. Over the past few years, I’ve come to find that many people come here to retire. Many people who have laid their roots here have chosen not to leave.

So, in the words of John Denver, "Country Road, take me home. To the place that I belong. West Virginia.”
