Can a grocery store incident hold the secret to business success?

It was an ordinary day at the local grocery store, and the store on this Sunday afternoon was bustling with excitement. I was a kid, eyes wide with wonder, as I stared at the colorful array of sweets.
I had my heart set on that gigantic, glittering candy bar. But as luck would have it, my mom said no.
“Too much sugar,” she declared, and that was that.
“Mum!” I protested, with my brother, joining in.
We envisioned ourselves as candy moguls, with empires built on sweets, power bikes, and mansions made entirely of chocolate.
Our dreams were crushed — at least, they seemed to be at that moment. Mom’s pragmatic view was that we’d survive without those candy bars, but to our young selves, it felt like a severe blow to our candy kingdom aspirations.
Well so it was, until we lodged a formal complaint to Dad!
Present Day
Fast forward to now, and I find that the opposition we faced to our aspirations of getting those candy bar wasn’t just about sugar. It was a microcosm of a much larger challenge we all face.
Whether as kids dreaming of candy empires, business tycoons trying to launch new business or professionals striving for career breakthroughs, we all face oppositions one way or the other.
From Grocery Store to Corporate Jungle
Now let me tell you; if you think you are always free to eat what you like, do what you want, or you think facing opposition to your aspirations only happens in childhood, think again!
Getting opposed is a persistent, multifaceted beast that follows us from those sweet shop dreams to the corporate world.
Let me tell you about my first job!
**I was fresh out of college, full of ideas and enthusiasm, ready to take on the world. **I walked into my new office, a building where the coffee was strong, and the office politics were even stronger!
Before I Learnt The Secrets

My grand ideas, were met with skeptical glances and, at times, outright dismissal. My attempts to introduce innovative solutions were shot down as impractical. “You’re too young,” they said.
“Look at this NYSC kid, what exactly does he know!”
“Fresh graduate with a sweet mouth! Clearly doesn’t have enough experience!”
“His ideas are half baked. Too young, too inexperienced!”
“Just too lucky! I can’t believe that was a success!
“Okay, give him the reins. Let’s show him some pepper!!”
Sounds any familiar?
I felt like I was in that Grocery store again, only now the candy was career success, and the opposition was in the form of colleagues who prefer sticking to the status quo.
But here’s where things got interesting!
Overcoming opposition I discovered isn’t about eliminating it. It’s about navigating through it, learning from it, and sometimes, turning it into an advantage.
Let’s explore the strategies I used to turn those professional hurdles into stepping stones.
Strategy 1
I embraced the Opposition
Opposition you see is everywhere!
From the college student with big dreams who’s told they’re unrealistic, to the teenage entrepreneur whose innovative ideas are dismissed as too ambitious, to the grandma at the driving school who’s advised that their dream of starting a gourmet food truck is impractical.
It happens to the best of us!
When I was starting out, I learnt that facing opposition head-on is crucial. Instead of seeing it as a barrier, I began to view it as a challenge.
The resistance I encountered pushed me to refine my ideas and make them even better. Just like the candy store was a place where I learned to deal with disappointment, the workplace became a training ground for resilience and innovation.
Secret 2
I learnt from Naysayers
Ever had someone tell you your idea is terrible, only for it to become a huge success later? It’s a classic story in the business world. One of my early projects was initially met with criticism.
My ideas seemed outlandish to some, but I took the feedback seriously. I refined my approach, incorporated the valid points, and turned the project into a success.
Remember, even Stan Lee faced opposition when creating Spider-Man. His publisher thought a teenage superhero with personal problems was a terrible idea.
Yet, that same character became one of the most beloved superheroes of all time. The key is to listen to criticism but to also trust your instincts and make improvements where necessary. Read more about that **here**
Secret 3
I Created Comebacks out of Setbacks
It’s important to think of opposition as a temporary setback rather than — you’ guess it; a permanent block!
Are you dreaming of a better job, moving to a better estate, or a teenager hoping to start a tech company? Expect some obstacles!
But don’t be deterred, many of the most successful people have faced similar roadblocks.
Take Galileo, for example. His revolutionary ideas were initially met with hostility and even led to his condemnation. But he persisted, continued his work, and his contributions changed the course of science.
When faced with opposition, remember that persistence often leads to breakthroughs.
The Sweet Taste of Success
Remember, the road to fortune can sometimes be a lonely trek, so it’s crucial to surround yourself with supporters who believe in your dreams.
The same way we finally went to Dad to make an appeal for the Candy bar, sometimes opposition fades away when a loving Dad comes on board!
I have to admit it; getting those candy bar in my mouth after speaking to Dad was a very sweet victory in my childhood, and just like that, every small win in our career or personal life can be a step towards the ultimate goal.
The opposition we face is an inevitable part of the journey. But with perseverance, learning, and a positive attitude, we can turn those challenges into opportunities.
Now, go forth and spread joy, love, positivity and success!
Cheers and God’s speed as you turn denial into victory and crack down the opposition.
