A Decade of Gaelic Storm: Our St. Patrick’s Day Tradition in Chicago

St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago is always an event — but for us, it’s more than just a celebration. It’s a tradition. For the past ten years, we’ve marked the holiday with a night filled with Irish music, great friends, and the electric energy of Gaelic Storm at the House of Blues.

This year was no exception.

A Night of Music & Tradition

The evening started at Hampton Social, where we gathered for drinks and a light dinner, catching up and soaking in the festive energy of the city. St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago has a kind of magic to it — everyone’s in a celebratory mood, and the streets are alive with green, laughter, and anticipation.

From there, we headed to the House of Blues for the main event: Gaelic Storm. But before they took the stage, we got to experience something new — Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band opened the show, setting the tone for a night of high-energy, foot-stomping fun. Their sound was gritty, soulful, and a little unexpected, and we couldn’t get enough of the washboard-playing powerhouse in the band.

When Gaelic Storm finally came on, it was like coming home.

More Than a Concert — A Tradition That’s Spanned a Decade

Seeing Gaelic Storm isn’t just about the music. It’s about the memories we’ve built over the years. Every show feels like a reunion — a reminder of past St. Patrick’s Days spent clapping, singing, and raising a glass to another year of friendship and tradition.

We’ve only missed one show in the last decade — the year we were in Japan when I ran the Tokyo Marathon. That trip was unforgettable in its own way, but there’s something about being in Chicago on St. Patrick’s Day, surrounded by the energy of live music, that just feels right.

This year, we got to enjoy the Box seating — which meant drinks, snacks, and the perfect view of the stage. It was a different way to experience the show, but it added to the fun, giving us a chance to soak in every note, every fiddle solo, and every moment of the crowd dancing along.

After the concert, we weren’t ready for the night to end, so we headed to the Foundation Room for more music, dancing, and even a chance to say hi to some of the band members — a perfect way to wrap up the evening.

How Many More Years?

Gaelic Storm has been doing St. Patrick’s Day shows for a long time, and while the energy is still there, we can’t help but wonder how many more years this tradition will continue.

Each show feels a little more special, a little more meaningful — because at some point, there will be a last one. And when that day comes, it will be a bittersweet end to a decade-long tradition that has given us so many incredible memories.

But for now, we celebrate. We sing along, we raise our glasses, we dance like we don’t have to wake up early the next day. Because that’s what traditions are about — cherishing the moments while they last.
