1. From Spectrum Empires to IP Citizenship

For more than a century, communication networks have been built around ownership of spectrum. Whoever owned the airwaves controlled identity, billing, and access. SIM cards became citizenship papers, tying humans to operators much as passports tie them to nations.

But the world has changed. Shared spectrum models like CBRS in the U.S. and local 5G in Europe and Japan have shown that radio access can be democratized. Enterprises, universities, and even communities can deploy their own 4G/5G networks using open cores and commodity radios. The radio layer no longer defines the empire.

2. IPv6: Infinite Address, Finite Freedom

IPv6 was supposed to make every device a first-class citizen of the Internet. With 128 bits of address space, every human on Earth could own trillions of unique addresses. Yet, paradoxically, the move to IPv6 hasn’t liberated identity — it’s still controlled by ISPs and mobile operators. Your IP is leased, not owned.

What if instead, you could buy and register a static IPv6 address or prefix that belonged to you forever — as portable as your name or passport? You could then authenticate to any network (Jio, Airtel, AT&T, Starlink) and bring your own identity, just as you bring your own email or cloud storage.

That shift — user-owned IP identity — is the essence of what we might call 7G.

3. The Architecture of 7G

7G isn’t about terahertz frequencies or AI antennas. It’s about how identity and connectivity decouple.

3.1 Identity Layer

Every user owns a globally routable IPv6 prefix, cryptographically signed and registered with a trusted registrar. Think of it as an Internet-native passport. Ownership could be tied to a digital wallet or decentralized identity ledger. This prefix becomes your network soul — persistent, provable, portable.

3.2 Connectivity Layer

Operators become bandwidth utilities. Their role is to provide last-mile IP transport, not identity. When a user connects, the network authenticates the prefix via a lightweight attestation protocol — similar to TLS or RPKI validation. Once verified, the user’s traffic flows normally. Operators can still meter and bill bandwidth, but they no longer dictate who you are.

3.3 Trust Layer

Lawful intercept, QoS, and emergency calling remain possible via metadata binding (SUPI ↔ prefix mapping), but these become policy contracts, not hardwired dependencies. Regulators can still audit without stifling autonomy.

4. Lessons from CBRS and Private 5G

CBRS (3.55–3.7 GHz) turned spectrum into software. Using dynamic sharing via a Spectrum Access System (SAS), anyone can deploy a private LTE or 5G network. Enterprises run their own cores, issue SIMs, and manage local QoS — all without national licenses.

This model eroded the old telecom hierarchy. HPE, Cisco, and AWS now sell “private network-in-a-box” solutions. What’s missing is a universal addressing layer so that users can carry their identity across these islands. That’s where 7G comes in: a portable IPv6 identity that lets a device hop seamlessly between private and public networks while remaining itself.

5. Security and Trust in a User-Owned Network

Critics will ask: if users own addresses, what about abuse, spoofing, or traceability? The answer lies in cryptographic provenance. Every 7G address block can be bound to a verifiable credential, with revocation and delegation mechanisms akin to DNSSEC and RPKI. Instead of central KYC databases, we get distributed, auditable identity proofs.

And because IPv6 supports massive segmentation, users could delegate sub-prefixes to devices, IoT nodes, or even AI agents — each with its own security profile. The same person could own their house network, car network, and drone swarm under a single digital identity.

6. Economics: The End of Operator Lock-In

Operators survive today by owning the choke points of identity — your SIM, your number, your APN. In 7G, they become data utilities, competing on latency, coverage, and reliability. Users pay for bandwidth, not belonging. This opens space for micro-operators, community ISPs, and mesh networks that interoperate through the user’s portable identity layer.

The business implications are profound: spectrum becomes a service, not a scarcity; connectivity becomes a right, not a rental.

7. The Path Forward

7G doesn’t require waiting for 3GPP Release 21 or new silicon. It can begin now:

  • Register your IPv6 prefix. Services like Hurricane Electric already let individuals reserve address blocks.
  • Tunnel it via any operator. Use VPNs or WireGuard to test user-owned addressing today.
  • Advocate for open-spectrum laws. Push for CBRS-like frameworks globally.
  • Build open tools. Develop lightweight authentication for prefix ownership and mobility.

8. A Civilizational Shift

6G talks about merging intelligence and connectivity. 7G should merge identity and autonomy. When every person controls their digital coordinates, networks cease to be prisons and become commons. The operator is no longer your landlord — it’s your utility provider.

In that world, a phone, car, or AI agent no longer asks, “Which network am I on?” but simply asserts, “Here I am.”

That’s not science fiction. That’s 7G: The Age of Self-Owned Networks.

The future of networks won’t be built by towers or telcos — it will be built by people who dare to own their address in the universe of information.
