The humidity of Cape Town and the early night on the seafront envelop me. I feel a sense of ease and trust, even though I have only just met this group of people. The sounds of African drums and singing fill the air as we engage in a bonding activity to immerse ourselves in the culture.

Welcome to the Global Freedom Fellowship 2025, with participants travelling from countries around the world who have previously been incarcerated. Through The Global Freedom Fellowship — Incarceration Nations Network, is actively building and maintaining a vibrant transnational community of leaders with first hand experience in the justice system.

By providing essential support for their initiatives and fostering connections across international boundaries, Incarceration Nations Network is empowering these individuals to share their insights and collaborate on meaningful reform efforts. This initiative not only strengthens their voices but also amplifies the collective impact of their work in advocating for justice and systemic change.

In just two weeks, this group of individuals will come together as a family, bonded by shared experiences, deep emotions, camaraderie, and an unshakeable sense of belonging. So, how did this transformation into a close-knit tribe happen in such a short time? Let’s start our morning ritual with a vibrant expression filled with strength and unity.

Welcome to — The Haka! I’m not a huge fan of rugby, but anyone who follows sports will be well aware of the Māori ceremonial dance performed by New Zealand before their games begin. I was hooked. Emulating the sounds, expressions, and movements of our comrade Tricia was captivating, drawing us into an intoxicating experience that we couldn’t help but revel in.

The reflective sessions that we held, rooted in our shared struggles, pain, and experiences of darkness and trauma, fostered a profound sense of companionship among us. As we opened up about our vulnerabilities, we discovered an unique understanding of one another’s journeys. This exchange not only allowed for deep empathy to flourish but also cultivated a compassionate environment where we could support each other fully. Our shared healing was powerfully fuelled by the strength of hope, courage and willingness to change.

Travelling through the townships of Langa and Soweto, I was struck by the harsh realities of inequality that continue to persist in the country today. The contrast between privilege and poverty is profound and demands your attention. I was overwhelmed by a deep sense of rage and anger, coupled with a intense feeling of helplessness in response to what I was witnessing. Economic prosperity had yet to illuminate these communities, leaving them in the shadows of opportunity.

Residents of informal settlements are grappling with numerous challenges, including issues related to their rights, inadequate sanitation, poor living conditions, and a lack of access to essential services. Alarmingly, these problems have intensified since the end of Apartheid in 1994. As a white person navigating these communities, I am acutely aware of the historical and systemic challenges that have shaped them.

My own experiences growing up in a context of oppression and conflict in Ireland have given me insight into the complexities of these issues, fostering a deep respect for the resilience of those who live here. Despite this, I continue to experience feelings of shame and guilt, as my skin colour aligns me with those who oppressed the people living in these townships.

Visiting Robben Island, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and his family home over forty years was an incredibly powerful experience. I was deeply moved by Mandela’s presence, his sacrifices, and his unwavering commitment to making a difference in his country.

Wandering through the archives felt like striding through history. I not only had the privilege of holding his Nobel Peace Prize but also had the chance to browse through the entries in his secret notebook, penned during his time on Robben Island.

Participating in a leadership course at the Desmond Tutu Foundation, centered around the principles of UBUNTU — an African philosophy that emphasises the interconnectedness and humanity of all individuals — was an inspiring experience. As I engaged with fellow participants, I felt a renewed sense of hope for what can be achieved when dedicated leaders come together with a shared purpose.

The discussions we had were not only enlightening but also ignited a passion for collective action and social responsibility. Witnessing this commitment among diverse leaders reminded me of the profound impact we can make when we honour the dignity and worth of every person. It filled me with optimism about the possibilities that lie ahead when we collaborate to serve our communities and uplift one another.

Our journey to the Safari kicked off with a transportation hiccup, a lot of mud, and me without any shoes! It’s funny how challenges like this create strong bonds between us. The safari was one of the most entrancing experiences I’ve encountered in my life to date. On our last night together at Safari, we gathered around the warm glow of a fire pit, the crackling flames illuminating our faces and creating a cosy atmosphere. As we settled into our seats, the conversations flowed naturally, and we began to share our personal experiences of life after incarceration.

Each story was a testament to resilience and hope, highlighting the challenges we faced in reintegrating into society and forming meaningful relationships. We discussed the feelings of isolation and uncertainty that often accompanied our transition, as well as the small victories that helped us regain a sense of belonging. Through laughter and some tears, we connected on a deeper level, realising that while our journeys were unique, we all sought understanding, acceptance, and the chance for a fresh start.

As I stepped off the bus to visit both Pollsmoor Prison and Brandvlei Correctional Centre, I had no idea who we would encounter. However, any feelings of uncertainty quickly faded as I was greeted by the faces of incarcerated men and women who were determined to forge a brighter future for themselves through education. I couldn’t help but be inspired by their determination to make a change with real intention. Reframing possibilities and committing to the work builds your self — worth.

Disembarking from our plane in Cape Town, I was gripped by the enormity, beauty, and importance of Table Mountain. Reaching the summit during my fellowship must be completed.

Entering the cable car, its floor gently swaying beneath my feet, a rush of excitement surged through me, evoking the childlike thrill of adventure. The doors slid shut with a soft thud, sealing me in with fellow travellers, their eager chatter heightening the anticipation in the air. As the cable car began its ascent, I leaned against the glass, my eyes feasting on the awe-inspiring scenery that unfolded below.

The ascent to the summit of Table Mountain was underway. Upon reaching the top, I was struck by the breath taking views — the ocean stretching out before me and the mist beginning to gather as the sun dipped below the horizon. I pinch myself to ensure it’s not just a dream. This moment will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Our time in South Africa has come to an end, yet our work is just beginning. The Global Freedom Fellowship is a movement built by those who are willing, united by our lived experiences, shared understanding, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference for those whom society often overlooks. The time for talk has ended.
