She spoke of blinding lights, alcohol, drunk men, and weed. She laughed at danger and welcomed it with glee.
I stared into her gleaming eyes and slowly tried to speak. I asked why she’d risk herself, said what she meant to me.
She did not understand — no, she dismissed my every word. “That’s not true,” she insisted.
“You b****, you’re being absurd.”
I fell silent at her cruelty, stunned by the exchange. “Was this sudden?” I wondered. “Or was she bound to change?”
I went on to feign a smile and listen as she spoke. But when she finally finished, The bond between us broke.
I texted her thereafter, made an excuse to stay away. “I am overwhelmed with work; I have no time today.”
And while I drifted further, she kept on questioning me, Asking when I’d be available, why I wouldn’t speak.
Each time, I laughed, bemused, for I’d done exactly that. But, alas, my lifelong friend had left me in the past.
