Mas Nakakahinga Ako sa Espasyong Katabi Ka
“You are not my escape from reality; you are my peace within it.”

There was a time when I thought being alone was the only way I could breathe.
Whenever the pressure became too much, the deadlines, the expectations, the endless cycle of trying to be enough, I would disappear into quiet places. Empty classrooms after everyone had left. A seat by the window where no one would notice me staring outside for hours.
I called it breathing.
But if I were being truthful, I wasn’t really breathing.
I was just surviving.
I carried my exhaustion everywhere. In my shoulders. In my sleepless nights. In the way my chest felt heavy whenever another requirement appeared on the screen. Some days, I would sit alone and convince myself that isolation was peace, because at least nobody could see me falling apart.
Then you happened.
Not in a dramatic way.
You simply sat beside me one day.
And somehow, the space next to you felt different from every space I had ever run to.
I noticed it during the days when my mind felt like it was collapsing under deadlines. The days when my hands trembled from stress and my thoughts refused to slow down. I would look around for a place to escape, only to realize that the place I was searching for was no longer empty.
It was the seat beside you.
Because for some reason, when you were there, the noise inside my head became quieter.
The world didn’t stop demanding things from me.
My responsibilities didn’t disappear.
The exams remained difficult.
The pressure remained heavy.
But somehow, carrying all of it felt easier when you were sitting beside me.
You never needed to fix anything.
You never needed to solve my problems.
You never needed to tell me that everything would be okay.
Your presence alone felt like opening a window in a room I didn’t realize was suffocating me.
And that’s when I understood something.
I wasn’t searching for solitude all those times.
I was searching for peace.
And somehow, I found it in you.
With you, I don’t feel the need to be strong every second.
I don’t have to pretend that I’m handling everything perfectly.
I don’t have to hide the dark circles under my eyes, the frustration behind my smile, or the exhaustion I try so hard to keep invisible.
With you, I can be vulnerable.
I can admit that I’m tired.
I can admit that I’m scared.
I can admit that there are days when I don’t know if I can keep up anymore.
And somehow, those confessions don’t feel embarrassing when they’re with you.
They feel safe.
Sometimes I imagine my mind as a city filled with endless traffic — horns blaring, lights flashing, people rushing in every direction. Everything moving so fast that I can barely hear myself think.
Then you arrive.
And suddenly, it feels like standing in a quiet park in the middle of that chaos.
Not because the city disappeared.
But because you gave me a place to rest inside it.
You became the pause between my racing thoughts.
The silence between my worries.
The calm after a long day of pretending I was okay.
I used to think breathing meant being alone.
Now I know better.
Because out of all the places I’ve hidden in, all the corners I’ve escaped to, all the empty rooms I’ve sat in hoping to find peace,
I’ve never breathed as freely as I do in the space beside you.
Maybe that’s why I keep looking for that empty seat next to you.
Not because I need saving.
Not because you make my problems disappear.
But because when I’m beside you, I don’t feel like I have to carry everything alone.
And after spending so long surviving, that feeling is enough to make me breathe again.
Mas nakakahinga ako sa espasyong katabi ka.
Because in a world that constantly asks me to be stronger, faster, better, and more ,
the space beside you is the only place that reminds me that I am allowed to simply be human.
