The Not so Distant Future, Personalized Medicine
Individualized medicine, also known as precision or personalized medicine, is the concept that prediction, diagnosis, treatment and, eventually, prevention can be matched to an individual patient based on genetics, environment and lifestyle.
Personalized medicine (PM) has the potential to tailor therapy with the best response and highest safety margin to ensure better patient care. “‘By enabling each patient to receive earlier diagnoses, risk assessments, and optimal treatments, PM holds promise for improving health care while also lowering costs.”1 “In contrast to current practice, health care should now not focus on disease, but on health; not on disease status, but on trajectory; not on treatment based on pathology but on avoiding pathology; not on treatment trial and error but on selection of the best treatment with continuous optimization.”2
The Importance of Data in Personalized Medicine
In recent years, advances in genomic and clinical science have created innovative opportunities to further tailor health care to each patient. Personalized medicine has taken science and research out of the laboratories and into the everyday life of humanity. Personalized medicine is viewed as a continuum of care. Information on Genomics resides, travels with, and helps the individual make healthy decisions in life just as the use of family history and allergies do now.

In a just published article, January 9, 2019
The NIH announces its plan to launch a study, known as the All of Us Research Program, which involves a group (cohort) of at least 1 million volunteers from around the United States. Participants will provide genetic data, biological samples, and other information about their health. To encourage open data sharing, participants will be able to access their health information, as well as research that uses their data, during the study. Researchers will use these data to study a large range of diseases, with the goals of better predicting disease risk, understanding how diseases occur, and finding improved diagnosis and treatment strategies.3
This is just an example of the energy that is propelling the concept of Individualized medicine forward. Government agencies, pharmaceutical industry and independent companies are all on board. Momentum is growing and it is growing fast.
“The revolution of PM has created a lucrative opportunity for pharmaceutical companies developing molecular-targeted therapeutics, but also through the optimised use and repurposing of existing drugs and combination therapies.”4 Pharmaceutical companies are already making plans to close their doors on traditional medications in favor of adopting the personalized medicine approach.
This is an exciting time of a paradigm shift in health care, but will it include the holistic approach that many patients clamor for, that of including Complementary and Alternative Medicine(CAM). In a 2009 study PM has potential for engendering a confluence between biomedicine and CAM as a part of the paradox of the 21st century medical landscape.5
