In Part I, I discussed the evolution of Medtronicโs workforce over the past few decades. In this Part, I will focus on Medtronicโs economic output during the same period, in particular, its revenue (top-line) and earnings (bottom-line).
Historically, Medtronic has achieved growth in its core markets, resulting in steady revenue and profit growth. The development was achieved both organically and through a series of small and strategic tuck-in acquisitions that complemented the companyโs existing offerings.
In January 2015, Medtronic completed its acquisition of Covidien (Medtronic Minimally Invasive Therapies Group) for $43 billion. The acquisition, which was more like a merger, garnered significant media attention, as it was the largest MedTech acquisition to date.
Although promising on paper, the acquisition presented substantial challenges for Medtronic. Before the acquisition of Covidien, Medtronic reported steady revenue growth, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 5%, reaching $17 billion in 2014. Following the acquisition, Medtronicโs revenue nearly doubled, reaching $29 billion in 2016, making it the worldโs largest medical device company by revenue. However, beyond the initial increase, Medtronicโs revenue remained essentially unchanged, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.5%, growing by only 10% over eight years, reaching $32 billion by 2024.
More importantly, despite doubling its revenue and workforce, Medtronicโs operating profit remained relatively unchanged at around $5 billion. This goes against what was initially promised by leadership, stating that โthe acquisition will create a lot of synergy between the two entities.โ Instead, the acquisition seems to have created further inefficiencies within the organization, which negatively impacted its bottom line.
In Part III, I will bring Part I & II together and quantify Medtronicโs operational efficiency over the years using standard metrics such as โRevenue Per Employeeโ and โProfit Per Employeeโ.
