1. Active Volcano: Rinjani is an active stratovolcano. Its most recent significant eruptions have been from the Barujari cone (or Gunung Baru, meaning “New Mountain”) which sits within the caldera lake.

2. Elevation: It’s the second-highest volcano in Indonesia, soaring to 3,726 meters (12,224 feet) above sea level.

Caldera & Segara Anak Lake: One of its most stunning features is the massive caldera (about 6km by 8.5km) which is partially filled by a beautiful crescent-shaped crater lake called Segara Anak (“Child of the Sea”). The lake is about 2,000 meters above sea level and is considered sacred by many.

4. Barujari Cone (Gunung Baru): This active volcanic cone has risen from the center of Segara Anak lake. It’s the source of recent volcanic activity.

5. Hot Springs (Aik Kalak): Near the Segara Anak lake, there are natural hot springs, which are a popular spot for trekkers to relax and soothe sore muscles.

Reaching the true summit is incredibly demanding, involving a pre-dawn start and a scramble up loose volcanic scree, but offers breathtaking panoramic views.

• Crater Rim (Plawangan Sembalun or Plawangan Senaru): Even reaching the crater rim provides spectacular views of the caldera, lake, and Barujari cone.It’s a hugely popular, though very challenging, trekking destination. Treks typically range from 2 days/1 night to 4 days/3 nights, with common routes starting from Sembalun (for summit attempts) or Senaru (often for reaching the crater rim and lake).
