There is IQ and there is EQ but something even more profound is how you need Emotional intelligence (EQ) above all. It’s excellent to be smart and it is even more excellent to have an emotional intelligence that accompanies it.
For the longest time, I wasn’t sure I understood the rave about EQ. IQ was the real deal really. Secondary school wasn’t any helpful not when insults like, “Your IQ is ridiculously low.” and a whole other bunch I don’t remember so of course, everybody paid attention to the darkest in the room. Even now, we probably pay attention to the one who spits more facts, says the darndest things, has a glib tongue, and has the smartest thing to say more than any other person in the room.
But reality had proven, the older I get, that being smart is excellent but understanding and recognising emotions in others and in myself even more excellent.
The one who understands and recognizes emotions and is even well aware how to use this to manage relationships and friendships thrive even better especially in certain settings.
Emotional intelligence affects how we interact with people, manage behaviors and navigate the complexities that is people even in making Personal decisions.
Recently I’ve being binge reading some web novels (billionaire genre) and one of the things I’ve noticed is how people interact with the male main character(MMC) who is also likely the richest and most powerful man in the book settings. He been the richest and most powerful man means to a certain degree he can determine the life and death of other people.
Now, people addressing him should and would be careful while dealing with him. And in most scenario where two people are interacting with him, one recognizes and understands the power this person carries and is quite careful about their speech in front of him, quietly and carefully watching for any change in expression as they address him, however there is always that one person who doesn’t pay attention to the things around them and just spills on and on without caring about the changes in expression of this MMC and might even be blind to every other person’s change in expression trying to warm them.
That is a case of blind EQ because without the ability to recognize and understand the emotions fleeting around them, they are likely to suffer a huge loss.
It’s same even in real life. EQ is as important as you consider IQ and being smart has nothing to do with being emotionally intelligent either.
It’s a style you cultivate. A personality you learn. May or may not be your survival kit.
