Beauty, hope, and love — reflected in every act of kindness

It is hard not to see beauty as one of the great gifts of weather and clouds.

This scene brings to mind The Golden Rule and Norman Rockwell’s famous painting on the subject. Having studied Rockwell during my college years as I prepared for a career in photography, I came to appreciate one of the central themes running through his work: Rockwell painted ideals — a vision of what life could and should look like.

As Rockwell himself said, “I’d been reading up on comparative religion. The thing is that all major religions have the Golden Rule in common. ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ Not always the same words, but the same meaning.”

When Pope Francis visited the United States in September 2015, he echoed this timeless principle in one of his first addresses:

“Let us remember the Golden Rule: ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ (Mt 7:12). This rule points us in a clear direction. Let us treat others with the same passion and compassion with which we want to be treated. Let us seek for others the same possibilities which we seek for ourselves. Let us help others to grow, as we would like to be helped ourselves. In a word, if we want security, let us give security; if we want life, let us give life; if we want opportunities, let us provide opportunities. The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick which time will use for us.”

What does The Golden Rule mean to you?

If you find yourself struggling and wondering why life falls short of what it should be, consider this: one expression of the Golden Rule is turning outward — recognizing the needs of others and choosing to meet them. Sometimes, when we notice a need, it may be an invitation to act.

The invitation is to move from dependence to dependability, and from good intentions to meaningful action. In serving others and living out the values we hold dear, we often receive far more than we could ever give.
