Dalian Train Back on MRT‑3 Rails for Dynamic Testing

A Dalian trainset — part of the long-idled fleet procured for the MRT-3 system — was spotted undergoing dynamic testing along the mainline on the evening of July 10, 2025. The train was first seen at approximately 9:00 PM, with a commuter photo sent to Railfans of the Philippines at 10:13 PM, though other eyewitnesses reported earlier sightings at the same station.

These CRRC Dalian trains, delivered between 2016 and 2017, were part of a ₱3.8-billion procurement deal for 48 new light rail vehicles (LRVs). However, their integration into the MRT-3 system has been delayed for years due to technical concerns, including weight issues and incompatibility with the line’s signaling systems.

In June 2024, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) had directed Sumitomo — the MRT-3’s maintenance provider — to fast-track the testing and possible deployment of the Dalian trains, following orders from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to expand capacity and improve commuter experience (Manila Standard, 2024).

The latest sighting suggests that testing is moving forward, potentially signaling the trains’ gradual return to operational readiness. However, full deployment will still depend on the outcome of performance and safety evaluations.
