The Biggest Mistake I Made Trying to Sell Digital Products With ADHD

I thought making more products would make me more money. My ADHD brain LOVED that strategy. My bank account? Not so much. 😂

When I first started trying to make money selling digital products, I genuinely thought I understood the assignment.

Create a digital product.

Upload it.

Post about it.

Make money.

Simple, right?

Except somehow my version became:

Create a planner.

Create an ebook.

Make a workbook.

Get another idea.

Stop working on the workbook.

Create THAT idea.

Redesign my Gumroad page.

Change my Pinterest strategy.

Watch somebody on YouTube making $20K a month selling printables.

Question my entire business.

Create another product.

😂

And then wonder:

WHY AM I NOT MAKING MORE SALES?!

If you’re an ADHD entrepreneur trying to sell digital products online, you may recognize this cycle.

Because the biggest mistake I made wasn’t choosing the wrong platform.

It wasn’t using the wrong font.

It wasn’t starting without thousands of followers.

And it wasn’t because I needed another $497 course.

My biggest mistake was much simpler:

I Kept Creating Instead of Learning How to SELL What I Already Created.

Ouch.

But I needed that realization.

My ADHD Brain Confused Creating With Building a Business

Creating feels AMAZING to me.

There’s a new idea.

Dopamine.

A blank Canva page.

Dopamine.

A cute color palette.

More dopamine.

ChatGPT gives me 25 product ideas.

OH, WE’RE RICH NOW.

😂

Except we’re not.

Because having 25 product ideas isn’t the same thing as having 25 products.

Having 25 products isn’t the same thing as having customers.

And having customers isn’t guaranteed just because I uploaded something to Gumroad.

That’s where I kept getting stuck.

I was doing a lot.

But I wasn’t always doing the things that moved people toward buying.

I Thought the Product Was the Business

This was probably my biggest misunderstanding about selling digital products.

I thought:

Product = Business

Now I’m realizing it’s closer to:

PRODUCT + TRAFFIC + TRUST + MARKETING + OFFER = BUSINESS

Photo by Andy Holmes on Unsplash

Photo by Andy Holmes on Unsplash

You can create the most beautiful ADHD planner in existence.

If nobody knows it exists?

$0.

You can make an amazing ebook.

No traffic?

$0.

You can spend three weeks making 300 pages of templates.

Wrong audience?

$0.

You can have an incredible product but a sales page that doesn’t clearly explain why somebody needs it.

Again:

$0.

And that’s frustrating because you start thinking:

“Maybe my product isn’t good enough.”

Sometimes that’s true.

But sometimes?

The right people simply haven’t seen it enough.

So What Did I Do?

Photo by Oyemike Princewill on Unsplash

Naturally, I created another product.

😂😂😂

Because ADHD logic said:

“Obviously THAT product was the problem. We need a NEW ONE.”

So I’d get excited about something else.

Create it.

Upload it.

Post about it a couple of times.

Wait.

Nothing dramatic happens.

Then my brain goes:

NEW IDEA!!!

And the cycle starts again.

I wasn’t giving my products enough time.

I wasn’t collecting enough data.

I wasn’t testing enough marketing angles.

I wasn’t building enough traffic around one offer.

I was constantly planting seeds…

then digging them up three days later to see why they weren’t tomatoes yet.

😭

Novelty Was Running My Business

Photo by Trương Tuyết Ly on Unsplash

This one was hard to admit.

Because I genuinely love entrepreneurship.

I love ideas.

I love creating.

I love figuring things out.

But novelty can be dangerous in business when you have ADHD.

The beginning is exciting.

Maintaining?

Not always.

Marketing the same product for the 27th time?

My brain:

Didn’t we already tell them about it Tuesday?!

Yes.

Yes, we did.

And approximately seven people saw it.

😂

This is something I’m learning:

I’m tired of my offer WAY before my audience is tired of hearing about it.

That means I can’t use my boredom as business data.

I Was Trying to Be Everywhere

At one point, my imaginary business plan basically looked like:

Pinterest.

Instagram.

TikTok.

Facebook.

Medium.

Email.

Gumroad.

Maybe YouTube?

Should I start a blog?

What about Threads?

Do people still use Facebook groups?

Maybe I need Etsy.

WAIT.

Should I be on Shopify?

😂

Meanwhile, I have kids.

A life.

A house.

Responsibilities.

And a brain that sometimes needs 45 minutes to convince itself to send one email.

Why was I trying to run the marketing department of Coca-Cola by myself?

More Platforms Didn’t Make Me More Consistent

Photo by NordWood Themes on Unsplash

Photo by NordWood Themes on Unsplash

They made me more overwhelmed.

And when I became overwhelmed?

I disappeared.

That’s another uncomfortable lesson I’ve had to learn about myself.

I’d build these giant routines.

MONDAY: 14 Pinterest pins

TUESDAY: Write three articles

WEDNESDAY: Create 47 Reels

THURSDAY: Launch a product

FRIDAY: Become a millionaire

Seems reasonable.

😭

Then I’d miss one day.

And instead of continuing Wednesday?

My ADHD brain would say:

“Well. We ruined the entire thing. See you next month.”

That’s the cycle I’m actively trying to break.

I Even Started a 30-Day Business Journey…and Stopped on Day Two

Yes.

Day.

TWO.

😂

I had the plan.

I had the motivation.

I had the vision.

And then consistency did what consistency sometimes does when ADHD enters the chat.

It disappeared.

But instead of turning that into another reason to quit, I’m learning to treat restarting differently.

Because rebuilding this business has forced me to understand something:

Restarting isn’t the opposite of consistency.

Photo by Maxime Horlaville on Unsplash

Photo by Maxime Horlaville on Unsplash

Sometimes restarting IS consistency.

You missed yesterday?

Come back today.

You disappeared for three days?

Come back.

Your Pinterest strategy didn’t work?

Adjust it.

Product didn’t sell?

Figure out why.

The goal isn’t:

Never mess up again.

The goal is:

Stop turning one messy day into a messy month.

I Also Made the Mistake of Creating What I Thought People Wanted

This is a BIG one for anyone searching for how to sell digital products online.

Just because you can make something doesn’t mean people want to buy it.

AI has made this even easier.

I can open ChatGPT and say:

“Give me 100 digital product ideas for ADHD moms.”

Boom.

100 ideas.

That doesn’t mean I should create 100 products.

Before I create something now, I’m trying to ask better questions:

What problem does this solve?

Who specifically has this problem?

Are they actively looking for a solution?

What are they already buying?

Can I explain the product in one sentence?

Would this save someone time, money, stress, or effort?

What happens AFTER they buy it?

Those questions aren’t as exciting as opening Canva.

But they’re much closer to the money.

Then I Learned Something From Pinterest

Pinterest has been changing how I think about marketing.

Because Pinterest forced me to stop thinking only about:

“What do I want to post?”

And start thinking about:

“What is SHE searching for?”

That’s a huge difference.

If I’m creating for ADHD moms who want to build online businesses, they’re probably not searching:

“Please show me whatever Aljuebrea decided to make today.”

😂

They’re searching problems.

Things like:

digital products for beginners

how to sell digital products

AI tools for entrepreneurs

ChatGPT prompts for business

ADHD productivity

passive income ideas

Gumroad product ideas

Pinterest marketing

how to make money with digital products

THAT is where my content needs to meet them.

I’m Learning That Marketing Isn’t Begging People to Buy

Photo by Christiann Koepke on Unsplash

Photo by Christiann Koepke on Unsplash

I used to feel weird repeatedly promoting something.

I didn’t want to sound salesy.

I didn’t want people thinking:

“Girl, we GET IT. You have a digital product.”

😂

But good marketing doesn’t have to be:

BUY MY THING! BUY MY THING! BUY MY THING!

Marketing can be:

Teaching.

Answering questions.

Sharing mistakes.

Showing behind the scenes.

Comparing options.

Showing how you use the product.

Talking about the problem.

Sharing results.

Creating tutorials.

Telling your story.

Helping someone BEFORE they ever spend $1 with you.

That’s exactly what I’m doing with this article.

I’m not pretending I have everything figured out.

I’m sharing what I’m figuring out while I’m building.

And I think there’s value in that.

My New Strategy Is Almost Embarrassingly Simple

I’m trying to stop building systems my ADHD brain won’t maintain.

Right now, I’m focusing heavily on:

MEDIUM → PINTEREST → GUMROAD

That’s it.

Medium gives me somewhere to create deeper, searchable content.

Pinterest helps me distribute that content and reach people who are already searching for ideas.

Gumroad gives me somewhere simple to sell and deliver my digital products.

And AI helps me move faster between all three.

One Medium article can become:

5 Pinterest pins.

An infographic.

A quote.

An email.

Several social posts.

New SEO ideas.

And potentially another article.

ONE idea becomes an ecosystem.

THAT feels sustainable to me.

AI Isn’t My Business Strategy

Photo by Igor Omilaev on Unsplash

Photo by Igor Omilaev on Unsplash

This deserves its own section.

Because I use AI constantly.

I love ChatGPT.

It saves me ridiculous amounts of time.

But I learned that:

AI can help me execute a strategy.

It can’t replace having one.

If I tell ChatGPT:

“Give me 50 digital products I can create.”

It will.

If I ask for another 50?

It’ll happily give me those too.

Now I have 100 ideas and somehow LESS clarity than when I started.

😂

Instead, I’m trying to use AI for things like:

Organizing my ideas.

Researching customer problems.

Creating product outlines.

Finding content angles.

Writing first drafts.

Repurposing articles.

Creating Pinterest concepts.

Brainstorming SEO keywords.

Improving sales copy.

Planning email sequences.

Breaking overwhelming projects into smaller steps.

That’s different.

I’m using AI to reduce friction.

Not manufacture more chaos.

Another Mistake: Expecting Passive Income Before Building Active Traffic

Photo by Abhay Prajapati on Unsplash

Photo by Abhay Prajapati on Unsplash

OHHHH.

Let’s talk about this one.

“Passive income” sounds beautiful.

Create digital product.

Upload digital product.

Go make coffee.

Money appears.

✨💰✨

Except there’s usually a giant invisible step:

SOMEONE HAS TO FIND THE PRODUCT.

😭

That’s what I’m working on now.

Traffic.

Because I don’t want to build a Gumroad store full of products nobody knows exist.

I’m trying to build little roads leading back to my offers.

Every Pinterest pin?

Road.

Every Medium article?

Road.

Every searchable keyword?

Road.

Every helpful email?

Road.

Every piece of content answering a customer question?

Road.

The goal isn’t to scream louder.

It’s to build more ways for the RIGHT person to find me.

What I Would Do Differently If I Started Today

Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash

Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash

If I lost everything and had to restart my digital product business tomorrow, I would NOT create ten products.

I’d choose:

ONE person.

ONE painful problem.

ONE useful product.

ONE main traffic source.

ONE simple funnel.

Then I’d spend way more time marketing that product than creating new ones.

I’d create content around every question related to the problem.

I’d test multiple Pinterest headlines.

I’d test different graphics.

I’d test different SEO keywords.

I’d improve the sales page.

I’d listen to questions people ask.

I’d collect emails.

I’d improve the product based on feedback.

And most importantly:

I’d give the strategy enough TIME to tell me whether it’s working.

Because 7 Days Isn’t Always Data

This is difficult for my ADHD brain.

I want immediate feedback.

I want to publish a pin at 2:03 PM and check analytics at 2:11 PM like:

“HELLO???”

😂

Business doesn’t always work like that.

Search traffic takes time.

Content takes time.

Trust takes time.

SEO takes time.

Building an audience takes time.

And that’s exactly why constantly changing strategies can hurt me.

If I’m changing the experiment every three days, I never actually learn what works.

The Biggest Change I’m Making

I’m trying to become less obsessed with:

What else can I create?

And more obsessed with:

How can I get the RIGHT people to discover what I already created?

That’s the shift.

Not:

MORE PRODUCTS.

But:

BETTER PROBLEMS.

BETTER CONTENT.

BETTER TRAFFIC.

BETTER OFFERS.

BETTER FOLLOW-UP.

And yes…

Eventually more products.

😂

But strategically.

I’m Still Figuring This Out

I want to say this because I don’t want these articles to become another corner of the internet where somebody pretends they discovered digital products Tuesday and made $73,000 by Friday.

That’s not my story.

I’m rebuilding.

I’m testing.

I’m learning Pinterest.

I’m writing on Medium.

I’m experimenting with SEO.

I’m creating digital products.

I’m watching what gets clicks.

I’m watching what doesn’t.

I’m trying things.

Some work.

Some absolutely FLOP.

And I’m learning how to build a business that works with my ADHD instead of constantly requiring me to become someone I’m not.

That’s the story I’m interested in telling.

Not perfection.

Progress — with receipts.

If You’re Making the Same Mistake…

Maybe you don’t need another product.

I know.

I KNOW.

That was painful for me to type too.

😂

Before opening Canva tonight to create product #17, look at product #3.

Ask:

Have I actually marketed this enough?

Does my audience understand what it does?

Am I creating searchable content around the problem?

Have I tested different headlines?

Have I tried different pins?

Does the product solve something specific?

Am I collecting emails from interested people?

Have I given it enough time?

Because your next sale might not be hiding inside your next product.

It might be hiding inside better marketing for the product you already have.

And THAT is the biggest lesson I’m learning while rebuilding my digital product business.

🧠✨ And This Is Exactly Why I Created My ADHD AI Prompt Vault

One of my biggest problems wasn’t a lack of ideas.

Obviously.

😂

It was turning those ideas into organized, marketable, finished things.

That’s why I created my:

ADHD AI Prompt Vault: 300 Ready-to-Use ChatGPT Prompts for Digital Products, Content & Online Business

Instead of opening ChatGPT and thinking:

“Okay…what am I supposed to type?”

You have starting points for:

✨ Digital product creation ✨ Product validation ✨ Customer research ✨ Pinterest marketing ✨ Medium articles ✨ SEO content ideas ✨ Sales copy ✨ Email marketing ✨ Lead magnets ✨ Content repurposing ✨ Business systems ✨ Productivity and planning ✨ And more

The idea is simple:

COPY → CUSTOMIZE → PASTE → CREATE.

AI isn’t going to build the business for you.

But used intentionally?

It can help make building one a whole lot less overwhelming.

Less guessing. Less overthinking. More finishing.
