The Trees Addition

And other garden happenings

Last year, I attended a local street fair put on by my city. All the city departments had tables with information or city equipment to see. I walked by one table that was giving out free baby trees. I picked a red flowering currant to take home. At that table, I discovered something amazing.

Our city has a tree voucher program. They will give you $500 towards eligible trees every year. Wow!

My husband and I talked about what trees we should get and where to put them. The house that we bought has a yard with lots of unused space. We love trees. We decided on a corkscrew willow, a ginkgo, and a plum tree for our orchard.

Two weeks ago, I filled out the online form and picked up the voucher the next day. It was so fun to go to the nursery and pick out our trees. The corkscrew willow didn’t qualify for the voucher program because it is botanically listed as a shrub. That’s ok. I have been wanting one for years.

So far we have two planted. One more to go. It’s so fun to look out and see more trees.

The apple trees are doing well. But some of the apples have some brown spots. Not sure what’s going on. I have wrapped the peach tree like a mummy in bird netting to protect our last 5 peaches.

The pear trees are just hanging out now. Nothing going on, no fruit. The birds and squirrels again ate all of our cherries. We got 6. That’s ok.

I’m out every day doing battle with sluggo, coffee grounds, Irish Spring soap, sticky bug traps, bird tape, neem oil spray and garlic spray.

The potatoes will be ready to harvest soon. The tomatoes are coming along. All the plants have blooms, one has little green tomatoes. Yay. We are enjoying lots of snap peas, herbs, onions and raspberries right now. Beans and squash are coming along too. It’s starting to warm up finally.

I picked radishes and some lettuce out of the chaos garden. It’s seems to be doing ok. I see lots of beets, dill, some radishes, a few lettuce and a kale.

What’s happening in your garden?
