The Night I Spoke with My Father — and the Morning My Blood Stirred
Introduction
Some conversations stay with you forever. This is the story of one night with my father — a quiet, unforgettable moment that reminded me where I come from, and why I’m still here.
1|“Come Home Alone,” He Said
My father called me out of the blue:
“Can you come home? Just you — not with your family.”
I felt uneasy. Why me, and why now? When I arrived, his first words were:
“Do you have anything left unsaid?”
For a second, my mind went blank. But then I understood — this was so like him. He wanted to talk while he still could, to make sure nothing important was left behind.
2|“Thank You” Came Naturally
When he asked that question, I didn’t have to think. The words came out by themselves:
“Thank you for passing down this bloodline — for keeping it alive until me.”
Even I was surprised by how natural it felt. Maybe it’s because I’ve often thought about my roots — where I come from, and what’s been carried into me.
We talked for hours — about the family, about life, and even about what to do if he were to fall ill. It wasn’t sad. It felt like a calm exchange of hearts.
3|My Father’s Simple Philosophy
At one point, I suggested he travel or buy something nice. He just smiled.
“I’m not interested in any of that,” he said. “As long as I can live within my pension, I have everything I need.”
He truly lives by the art of knowing what’s enough. There was beauty in his simplicity — a quiet strength that made me proud to be his son.
4|Counting the Generations
As we talked about family history, my father mentioned something about “the 7th generation.” Apparently, our family records go back to around 1670, the Edo period.
But then it struck me — blood flows beyond what’s recorded. The idea of “generations” is just a human marker. We’re all part of a much longer, deeper story.
That night, I felt small in a good way — a humble piece of an ongoing lineage that’s still alive through me.

5|The Hidden Chapter: Our Filipino Roots
Then came the biggest surprise. My grandfather was born in the Philippines.
It all began when my great-grandfather, Kumagorō, stowed away on a ship to the Philippines — jumped into the sea, swam ashore, and somehow started a company there.
It sounded like a movie. But it was real.
At that moment, I realized — that same fearless blood runs through me. A sudden heat rose inside, a rush I can only describe as:
“My blood was stirring.”
6|The Blood That Sleeps Within Us
What I learned from that night is this: knowing your roots isn’t just about the past — it’s about rediscovering yourself.
Even if the records fade, the spirit remains. The courage, the resilience, the energy to leap forward — they all live quietly inside us, waiting to awaken when the time is right.
7|Our Roots Light the Future
Conversations like this don’t happen often. But when they do, something deep inside us stirs awake — a reminder that we’re part of something bigger than our own lives.
If you have time, go home. Talk to your family. Ask about the stories you’ve never heard. You might find the spark that will carry you forward.
