I Summoned a Shadow for My Spouse: A Tale of Secret Passion and Deception

A Perfect Facade
A Perfect Facade
Willow Creek was bathed in the amber and rose light of the setting sun. Florence scrubbed the pan harder than necessary her hands submerged in soapy water. Her hair once a vibrant auburn clung limply to her forehead as she stared out of the window above the sink. Florence was 34 and had been married for a little over a decade to Harry. Harry’s laughter used to fill their twofloor home with warmth and love now it was little more than a hallowed out echo of grievance and regret. His hair was a mess of brown flies and his smile was like sunshine on even the bleakest of days. He was a high school teacher history was his subject storytelling his way of teaching. He was liked by his students for his animated telling of tales long since forgotten and his quick wit charmed his way through even the most dull and uninteresting of after school committee meetings. Florence was a freelance illustration. She used to love Harry’s passion the way he made every evening feel like an adventure. Lately however he had been staying late grading papers or so he said and his smile felt as though he saved it for everyone but her. She dried her hands on a faded dish towel and her gaze landed on her ring. Her hazel eyes saw doubt reflected back at her. She had always believed in them and the vow they spoke under a star tinged sky but that had been poisoned. She needed to know the truth now.
The Seed of Suspicion
It began with little things a whiff of strange perfume on Harry’s coat sleeve a text he hurried to hide when she wandered into his study an unexplained craving for weekend workshops that took him away. Florence was not wont to be prying but suspicions began to weigh her down too heavily. One night as Harry was showering she stole his phone her heart beating like a drum in her chest. The screen came to life with a message from Clara a name Florence did not know Missed you last night. Meet same time tomorrow Her stomach rolled and the phone fell from her shaking hand Clara.
The name seared into her mind. Was she a coworker a friend something else Florence’s imagination flew and she saw a nameless woman stealing away the man she had come to love. She turned to Harry that night with her voice shivering with the blend of rage and panic. Who’s Clara she said waving the phone like a club Harry’s face blanched but he came back just as quickly voice smooth as butter. Just a colleague Flo. We’re pursuing a curriculum project. You’re overthinking this. His normally warm gaze was cautious his words sounded practiced. Florence wanted to believe him but the seed of doubt was already planted its roots clutched around her heart.
A Desperate Plan
Florence just couldn’t settle and in the end she thought up a sophisticated little ruse. She wanted evidence something tangible to support or dismiss her fears. She recognised Clara’s name on the list of faculty at the school a youthful art teacher with a reputation for being magnetic and out of reach. Florence’s illustrator friends had spoken of Clara’s vibrant energy and her presence’s charisma and room domineering. The idea of Harry meeting someone so alive and different from her own tired complexion stung like a slap.
I’ll try him Florence murmured to herself one sleepless night her voice hardly louder than the hum from the refrigerator. She chose to befriend someone unthreatening of Harry’s loyalty in his love. She set up a fake email account under the name Emma a former college friend who claimed to have recently come to Willow Creek. She wrote a message that was cautious to be light and friendly inviting Harry for coffee to catch up. Her heart ached when she pressed send knowing she was crossing a line she could never uncross.
To her dismay Harry answered within hours speaking in a warm eager tone. Would love to meet up Emma what about Saturday at the Bluebird Cafe Mavis leaned forward staring at the screen her breaths short. The man who had no time for her could easily make time for a stranger. She felt a mix of triumph and despair she had caught him but at what price.
The Sting of Betrayal
Saturday dawned cool and radiant one of those bittersweet days of early autumn that used to always cheer Florence up. But that day she felt like an apparition as she slipped into the Bluebird Cafe wearing an oversize sweater and sunglasses toting her heart in a clunky backpack and gingerly taking a seat in a shadowed corner. She observed as Harry went in his usual lopsided grin splitting his face as he looked around the room for Emma. Florence’s chest tightened he was happier than she’d seen him in months.
She sent a text from the fake account Running late be there in 10 Harry nodded to himself as he told the lovely clerk before he leaned against a booth and ordered a coffee. Clara entered minutes later and Florence’s breath caught when she saw the woman from faculty photos tall with long blonde hair and a laugh that made heads turn. Clara sat down opposite Harry in the booth her hand raking across his as she chuckled at something he said. It was the intimacy as much as the gesture that knifed Florence to the heart.
She stood motionless as they spoke their heads bowed close their grins too recognisable. Harry’s hand rested on Clara’s arm and Florence found that the world tipped sideways. This wasn’t a colleague just catching up this was a man in love or at least in lust with someone who wasn’t his wife. She felt a sting of tears in her eyes but forced herself to remain and witness it all. As Clara bent to kiss Harry on the cheek her determination gave way. She left the cafe as autumnal wind carved her face streaked with tears
The Confrontation
That night Florence sat in their living room waiting for Harry her laptop open with the fake email account. She didn’t say hello when he strolled in whistling low. I’m aware of Clara. Her voice was firm although there was a storm going on inside. Harry tensed as his eyes flicked back to the laptop and then to her. Flo it’s not don’t lie to me she added her voice on the verge of breaking. I saw you today. At the Bluebird. With her. She nodded toward the laptop where the emails from Emma glowed accusingly. Harry’s face crumpled and for the first time he appeared like a little boy not the larger than life man she’d wed it was nothing it just you know happened he bumbled ruffling the back of his hair. Clara and I we connected. I didn’t mean to hurt you. His words were a confession and a betrayal rolled into one and every syllable cut at Florence’s heart. She wanted to scream to throw something but instead she stood her voice icy. I had a friend on the phone for you Harry. I wanted to believe you were mine still. But you’re not anymore.
A New Beginning
The weeks that followed were all pain and lucidity. Florence left and rented a little place above a bookstore in town. She went all in on her art her illustrations infused with a raw emotional edge that caught the attention of galleries. Most nights she wept herself to sleep for the life she’d lost but every morning brought a feint sense of fortitude. She wasn’t even Harry’s wife anymore she was Florence a woman renewing her sense of her own value.
Harry tried to call her and left voicemails full of apologies but Florence deleted them without ever listening. Clara she discovered was a brief affair that ended as soon as Harry was wracked with guilt following the confrontation. But it didn’t matter. The trust had vanished and along with it the bedrock of their marriage.
Florence looked up and saw herself one evening in the window as she sat in the lamplight sketching. Her eyes which used to be clouded with uncertainty now shone with something new optimism. She’d called a friend for her husband and she’d called hoping to save their love but she had largely uncovered a truth that freed her. The betrayal had shattered her but it rebuilt her painfully piece by piece into someone tougher someone healed first Snow over Willow Creek Florence shut her sketchbook and grinned. Her life with Harry was done but hers was just beginning.
