I Did a Lot of Things Today

Why Does It Feel Like I Failed?

It is Sunday, January 4, 2026. I got up at 8 AM this morning, and by 4 PM I finished so many things, but somehow I feel like I did nothing.

The pressure to be productive nonstop is real, and I never felt it more than today.

By 9 AM, I already had my breakfast, did my French lesson for the day, and planned my lunches for the week. I cuddled with my cat while doing Duolingo and making the meal plan.

Next on my to-do list was a load of laundry I didn’t manage to do yesterday since I have no dryer and one load was already drying on the rack (it's normal in Europe).

I started my first batch of cooking a little before 10 AM, and while my onions were sauteing, I loaded my dishwasher so my sink is clean for a new set of dirty dishes. Soon, my first lunch was cooking, I prepared veggies for my second lunch and it was time to finish my laundry.

It was around 11 AM when I sat down to have a cup of coffee while making the game plan for the next batch of cooking. I had my lunch at noon and at 12:30 PM I started preparing the rest of my cooking.

By 2 PM my lunches were cooked and packed for the week (it’s back to the office), the dishwasher was running, I washed my hair and had my fruit snack while watching Netflix to relax a bit.

At 3 PM it was time for my second coffee, still watching Netflix and relaxing. After that, I reloaded my dishwasher, cleaned my kitchen and took out the trash.

It’s 4 PM and here we are, writing this and feeling like I wasted the entire day.

Why are we in constant need to be productive every single moment of the day? And why did we define productivity as doing something to improve ourselves (reading, learning something new)? If we aren’t doing that, we are standing still and being called lazy.

I was neither today, and there is still time today to grab a book or learn something new or just have a relaxing evening before going back to 9 to 5.

But the real challenge isn’t finding the time for one more “improving” task; it’s silencing the voice that says my day only counts if I have a new skill to show for it.

The truth is, I spent the day caring for my future self, ensuring that I start my week with a clean shirt and a healthy lunch. That isn’t being lazy, it’s being responsible.
