Anne Becomes A Pirate
She joins the crew to raid the Spanish
Sailing from Scotland to Jamaica, Anne was kidnapped by the pirate John Rackman. After the Spanish rescued her, they gave her to the French. Convicted of piracy, she has been lashed and sold into slavery. However, Jack rescued her and married her. As man and wife, they become King George’s privateers and hunt Spanish ships.
This story is one of a young woman’s coming of age as she experiences the romance and tribulations of the high seas in the early 18th century. Read this as a standalone story, or catch up with the tale here:
Several times a day, the crew watched Anne measure the ship’s speed by dropping a knotted cord into the water. There was a weight attached to the end of the cord, and the pressure of the water passing by the hull suspended a portion of the cord, proportional to their speed. Anne counted the number of visible knots to determine their speed. Each day at noon Anne measured the angle of the sun and each night at midnight she measured the altitude of the North Star. “The altitude of the North Star above the horizon is our latitude,” she told Jack and the officers over dinner. “Port Royal is at eighteen degrees of latitude, but we are at seventeen. Thus, when I have calculated that we have traveled seven-hundred and eighty-six miles west of the Virgin Island, we will sail north to eighteen degrees latitude. Even if we are a bit too far west, or too far east, we will still find the island.”
I dare not even consider that this will fail!
Eight days after Jack passed the task of navigating to Anne, the lookout in the crow’s nest shouted “Land Ho!” Anne missed Port Royal by a scant ten miles.
“We have never completed this passage in such a short span of time. To the finest navigator afloat!” Jack toasted his wife that night at their dinner with the officers. There were no more questions regarding her orders after that.
The next morning, Jack and Anne approached the harbor master. “Aye,” he said, after studying his record book, “Mr. Douglas McKinnon and the Matilda were here, but that was over a year ago. There is no record of his having returned.”
“Please, sir, if he should return, tell him his daughter is well and she prays they will one day meet again.”
“Aye, lassie, I will do that.” He made a notation in his book.
“Papa is probably staying close to Scotland,” Anne told Jack as they returned to the Queen Anne.
That afternoon, Jack and Mr. Davis, returned from their meeting with the regional Governor, Sir Nicholas Lawes. “Anne, we are to attack the Spanish gold shipments in Panama. Can you find Nombre de Dios, Panama?”
Anne sorted through the ship’s charts. “I’m certain I could, but I don’t have a chart for the lands that far south. Why are we going there?”
“We are to attack the mule trains which bring the gold from Peru to Veracruz, Mexico. We are to loot them while still on land. The Isthmus of Panama is very mountainous and the mule trains must stay very close to the sea as they traverse this area. The Governor believes that they will be unprotected and we can capture their gold more easily on land than at sea. The amount of gold and silver in one train should be enormous. Perhaps King George will be sufficiently impressed as to grant our freedom from privateering.”
That afternoon, Jack took Anne, dressed as a man, to the Governor. “Your Excellency, this is my navigator, Mister… ah.”
“Uh, I am Mr. Bonny, Sir Lawes,” Anne stated in her best masculine voice. She bowed.
“Ah, yes, Mr. Bonny has no chart for Panama,” Jack continued. “We cannot make the voyage that you requested, without one.”
“Indeed,” the Governor replied, “my clerk will assist you.” He nodded to the clerk and they followed him. The three of them sorted through the available charts until one of Panama was located.
“Aye,” Anne stated after examining it, “this will do nicely.”
Back aboard ship, Anne made her notations and calculations, and then she announced, “Nombre de Dios is nearly due south of us and about six hundred miles away. The ocean between here and there appears to be completely empty. We should arrive in about six days.”
However, extended bad weather prevented their departure. Then Jack decided to careen the ship and clean her bottom.
“Darling, I’m in no hurry to go.” Jack confessed to Anne. “I have been stalling, hoping some event my save us from this task. The Spanish will not be taken by the surprise the Governor anticipates. Nombre de Dios is where Sir Francis Drake attacked the Spanish a hundred and fifty years ago. And Portobello, a few miles to the west, is where Captain Morgan attacked. While we will target a hamlet between the two, I expect the Spanish have made plans for a counterattack.”
Thus, they were in Jamaica for nearly a month when they finally ran out of excuses and departed. Having loaded the ship with food and water, Jack ordered the Queen Anne’s crew to set sail on the high tide.
This is not THE END of Anne’s adventure. With her new husband, can she become a pirate? How will they attack the Spanish in Panama?
