I Am Building Financial Stability

How I Stay Financially Stable as a Single Mother. Budgeting, minimalism, mindful spending, and the small financial habits that changed my life as a single mother.

For the past 11 years, I have been working in the Central Government sector in India. People who work in government jobs know this very well — our salary is stable, but most of us don’t earn in lakhs, especially in the initial years. Even after all these years, my salary still hasn’t touched six digits.

I’m also a single mother raising a 10-year-old boy, and my father lives with us too.

So with one salary, multiple responsibilities, and rising expenses everywhere… how am I still able to maintain financial stability without falling into debt?

That’s what I would like to share in this blog.

I’m not a financial expert. I’m just someone who learned things slowly through life experiences, mistakes, observation, and discipline. I hope some of these points might help someone who is trying to build a peaceful and financially stable life.

One thing deeply shaped my mindset about money.

During my childhood, I saw my parents struggle with debt. That phase affected me emotionally in many ways. So when I started earning, I took one strong financial decision:

“I should never borrow money unnecessarily.”

Even after 11 years, I still hold onto that principle.

Not because life was easy.

But because peace matters to me more than appearances.

Securing My Family Came First

Before focusing on savings or investments, I wanted my family to feel secure.

So the first thing I slowly built was an emergency fund.

That emergency fund became a huge emotional cushion for me. Life feels less frightening when we know we have something to fall back on during difficult times.

Along with that, I also took:

  • A term insurance for myself
  • Health insurance for myself
  • Health insurance for my son and parents

I personally feel these are the first few important steps towards financial stability.

Because financial planning is not only about growing money.

It is also about protecting our family from unexpected situations.

Many people postpone these things thinking, “I’ll do it later.”

But emergencies never ask permission before arriving.

Knowing that my family is somewhat protected gives me mental peace.

And honestly… peace itself is a form of wealth.

Budgeting Became the Backbone of My Financial Stability

The biggest reason behind my financial stability is budgeting.

I know budgeting sounds boring to many people 😄

Even I felt nervous when I first started tracking my expenses.

But now I genuinely cannot imagine my life without budgeting.

On the last day of every month, I create a budget for the upcoming month in an Excel sheet.

If there are festivals, birthdays, travel plans, school expenses, football tournaments, or any special occasions coming up, I include them beforehand while planning.

Then every day, I update my expenses category-wise.

This one habit changed my financial awareness completely.

Because now I always know:

  • How much I have spent
  • How much is left
  • Where my money is going
  • Which expenses are unnecessary

This practice also reduced impulsive spending.

Earlier, sometimes I would buy things emotionally.

Now my mind automatically asks: “Is this within the budget?”

Budgeting also helped me avoid lifestyle creep.

Even if salary increases slowly over time, our unnecessary expenses also quietly increase along with it if we are not careful.

Budgeting keeps me grounded.

Decluttering Quietly Changed My Financial Life Too

Two years back, I came across the concept of decluttering.

Initially I thought it was simply about cleaning the house.

But slowly I understood it was actually a mindset shift.

I decluttered almost 70 percent of my home over time.

Broken things.

Unused things.

Duplicate things.

“Just in case” things.

Impulse purchases.

Things I kept only out of guilt.

And honestly… decluttering changed my mental health too.

A clutter-free home brought so much calmness into my life.

Once we start enjoying peaceful spaces, we automatically stop craving too many things.

That is how I slowly entered into minimalism.

Minimalism taught me to appreciate what I already own instead of constantly chasing new things.

Nowadays before buying something, I naturally ask myself: “Do I really need this?”

That one question alone has saved me so much money.

Meal Planning Reduced Waste and Saved Money

This is another simple habit that helped me financially.

Every Saturday, I sit and prepare a meal plan for the upcoming week.

Based on that meal plan, I prepare:

  • Grocery list
  • Vegetable list
  • Snacks list

Then I buy only those things.

Earlier, without planning, I used to buy extra vegetables or groceries “just in case.”

Many times food got wasted.

Now wastage has reduced a lot.

Meal planning also reduced random online food ordering because we already know what we are going to cook.

This one small habit saves:

  • Money
  • Time
  • Mental stress

Especially as a working mother, reducing daily decision-making helps me a lot.

I Stopped Buying Things on EMI

This is one habit that gave me a lot of financial control.

Nowadays EMI culture has become extremely normal.

Everything can be bought on EMI.

Phone.

Bike.

Furniture.

Electronics.

Even small things.

But personally, I stopped buying things on EMI unless absolutely necessary.

If I genuinely need something, I save money first and then buy it.

This habit automatically filters unnecessary desires.

Because when we wait and save before buying, we understand whether we truly need that thing or not.

Also, I value things much more when I buy them after patiently saving for them.

That waiting period creates awareness.

I Chose My Son’s Passion Over Social Pressure

Nowadays schooling itself has become very expensive.

Many parents choose schools by comparing with relatives, neighbours, or social status even when it becomes financially stressful.

I understand that pressure because I have felt it too.

But slowly I realized something important:

There is no point struggling financially just to impress society.

My son studies in an average CBSE school.

That decision saves me a lot financially.

Instead, I spend that money on something he genuinely loves — football.

My son is deeply passionate about football and trains seriously.

Initially, like many parents, I was tempted to put him into multiple activities and make him an “all-rounder.”

But over time, I noticed his energy getting diluted.

He enjoys football wholeheartedly.

So now I focus only on supporting that passion.

And honestly, I feel more peaceful after simplifying things.

Financial Stability Is More About Habits Than Income

One thing life taught me very clearly is this:

Financial stability is not always about earning a huge salary.

It is often about:

  • awareness
  • discipline
  • mindful spending
  • avoiding unnecessary pressure
  • and building simple habits consistently

Of course, higher income helps.

But without financial awareness, even high income disappears quickly.

I still live a simple life.

I still learn every day.

I still make mistakes sometimes.

But compared to the fearful girl who once saw her parents struggle with debt… today I feel much more peaceful, stable, and confident.

And honestly?

That peace is worth more than showing off a luxurious lifestyle to the world.
