FriarNotes: 4 RHPs star in Tuesday win over Arizona; Notes on Campusano, Taylor, Minors

The Padres had several notable pitching efforts Tuesday night beginning with starter Germán Márquez.

Right-hander Márquez, making his first start since May 1, held Arizona to one unearned run on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts over five innings to earn the win. Márquez is 4–1 over his last six starts and the Padres are 5–1.

Right-hander Jhony Brito came on in relief and got an inning-ending doubleplay on the first Major League pitch he threw since Aug. 10, 2024. Brito had a strikeout in 1 2/3 perfect innings. Dating back to 2024, Brito has now pitched six straight scoreless innings over three games.

Right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez pitched a perfect eighth.

And right-handed closer Mason Miller struck out two in a perfect ninth to record his 23rd save while lowering his earned run average to 0.96 and his WHIP to 0.796.

PAD BITS:

— C Luis Campusano was 2-for-3 Tuesday night and is 3-for-8 with 2 walks in 4 games after missing almost two months with a broken toe. Campusano is hitting .300 (18-for-60) on the season.

— LF Samad Taylor was hitting .330 (29-for-88) with 11 RBIs, 6 stolen bases and 14 runs scored in 26 games since being promoted from Triple-A El Paso when he went on the injured list Tuesday afternoon with a right oblique strain. Taylor also had a .410 on-base percentage.

PADRES HISTORY:

July 8, 1976 — Left-hander Randy Jones sets a National League record by posting his 16th win before the All-Star break in a 6–3 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Jones is 16–3 with a 2.53 earned run average.

Rehabbing RH starting pitcher Matt Waldron had 3 strikeouts in 3 perfect innings for Triple-A El Paso Tuesday night. 2B Luis Rengifo (.320) was 2-for-4 with a RBI, a walk, a stolen base and a run in his final game with the Chihuahuas before being called up by the Padres.

SS Jorge Quintana (.237), the Padres’ №5 prospect, was 3-for-4 with a double, a RBI and a stolen base for Single-A Lake Elsinore.

SS Joniel Hernandez (.344), the Padres’ №15 prospect, was 2-for-4 with a double, 3 RBIs and a run in the Dominican Summer League.

C Ethan Salas (.278), the Padres’ №1 prospect, was 1-for-5 with a run for Double-A San Antonio. LF Tirso Ornelas (.268), the №24 prospect, was 1-for-3. RF Braedon Karpathios (.228), the №10 prospect, was 0-for-3 with a walk.

Starting RHP Kannon Kemp, the Padres №17 prospect, returned from the 60-day injured list to pitch 3 innings for High Single-A Fort Wayne, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts.
