All about Hashcat Masking

Just wanna share what’s been working for me when cracking passwords. Once I understood masks in Hashcat, everything changed. I started cracking passwords blowing through them like nothing.

Here’s why: masks give you insane power in Hashcat. Instead of trying every single thing possible, masks let you tell Hashcat what the password probably looks like. So you only try the ones that make sense.

Masks supercharge brute-force and dictionary attacks. For brute-force, you stop random guessing and start smart targeting — only try patterns that make sense. For dictionary attacks, masks add extra combinations so you catch passwords not exactly in the list. Both together = stronger attack, faster results.

What is Masking?

Masking is telling Hashcat the pattern of the password instead of trying everything. Like saying “it starts with a capital letter, then 4 lowercase letters, then 2 numbers.” Instead of guessing millions of wrong combos or just running through a dictionary, you only test the ones that match. Simple but powerful.

Masking Basics: The Building Blocks

To master masks, you need to understand the character sets. Think of these as your basic building blocks in Hashcat’s syntax:

?l : Lowercase characters (a-z)

?u : Uppercase characters (A-Z)

?d : Digits (0-9)

?s : Special characters (!@#$...)

?a : All of the above (the full range)

When you combine these, you create a surgical strike. For example, if you know a password starts with a capital letter followed by five digits, your mask is simply ?u?d?d?d?d?d. You are essentially telling Hashcat, "Search exactly here," and the efficiency gain is massive.
