On the shipping dilemma

We shift between two paths - get rid of everything and ship everything - frequently

We still aren't sure of the right answer but it's probably some hybrid form. The annoying thing is that a mix of the two doesn't necessarily split the cost difference in half. You still end up in the big shipping container

Getting rid of everything appeals because we've dragged this furniture a long way already. Everything could be replaced. Travelling light aligns with our values: detachment from material things and reducing our footprint . However...

Getting rid of furniture in Australia is tough, and so we lean towards shipping everything. The thought of any of it rotting unwanted on the nature strip, let alone all of it, is upsetting. What has the worst footprint? I'm sure you could actually work it out: shipping a household around the globe? or some or all of it going to landfill and new things needing to be bought?

We need to be realistic about the practicalities of getting rid of stuff, whether that's to loving homes, op shops (charity shops), or the tip: it takes time and energy.

Our son got sick today. My partner has been sick for a few days and it's only a matter of time before it gets my daughter. We have limited time. Knowing this, are we better off spending the remaining time keeping all the other plates spinning, rather than putting time and energy into spinning a plate which actually could be stopped?

Rather than getting rid of furniture are we better off directing energy towards reducing clutter? That way, when we get where we're going we're not trying to squeeze an impossible amount into our new home

I think this is where we've landed. I've put 80 % of my nonfiction books aside for the op shop. My partner is filling bags with clothes to donate.

That said there are many different factors vying for consideration here, emotion not being the least of them, so I might well end up reporting another change of direction tomorrow
